Speaking for myself, I got almost full marks on biology AS and well over 90% on chemistry AS too (and highest mark in the year at gcse). I'm applying for psychology at Oxford and read around the subject a lot (and again over 90% at AS). I don't want to be arrogant, but I don't think those predictions were unjustified. (My English Lit prediction is debatable as my module marks from last year weren't as high as I might have liked, though still As. Presumably they gave that prediction on the basis of my work throughout the year and perhaps earlier years.) At my school, people were generally predicted the grade they achieved at AS and then the teachers in each department went through those predicted As to determine who they felt was likely to achieve an A*.
The other people in this thread with more than one A* prediction are also applying to Oxford/Cambridge (so are presumably among the best students at their school) and I see no reason why you should insinuate that their predictions aren't legitimate. After all, someone has to get that grade.
