Default Accommodation

I'm applying to KCL however I already live in London (zone 2 and pretty near to the university). However under NO circumstances do I want to live at home, and I was wondering if KCL will not offer accommodation if you already live in London? Do they give preference to those who don't?

They are supposed to give preference to those living outside the M25, but you may be lucky. There is no guarantee.

Apparently the policy is changing this year so that students who live in london are at a lower priority than those outside of london. So yeah, they haven't given preference in the first round before but this year they will.

I don't think you'll get accommodation and to be perfectly honest, you don't deserve to either!

You might not want to live at home but you're so terribly close to the university and there are people who are coming from afar and have nowhere close to live. You understand their policy of priority right? Unless you offer your room at home to somebody from outside London, it's not really fair for you to take up a student room provided by Kings too.

At least make sure you get your name on the reserve list, places do open up.

I'd say apply anyway, the worst they can do is not give you a place. Then you'll just have to work a bit harder to meet people on your course that you'll want to live with in your second year! =)

You can always try out place like Liberty Living: http://www.libertyliving.co.uk/. You may not be living with students from your university, but you would be living with other students. You can also look for a place with other students from KCL. I'm sure their will be plenty of students looking for a place off campus.

Funny how everyone seems to think they know, but have absolutely no idea. Its computer generated and true its slightly biased to give more places to people from further away that doesn't mean that you don't get a place if you're from London. I lived literally half a mile from where I now study in Waterloo and was given a place. In Wolfson there are tons of people from inside London while I know of international students that didn't receive an offer. Like I said its a lottery, which is the only fair way, otherwise who knows if race/gender/age/course of study ect could effect allocations.

Apply. Simple.

Bonus advice - don't take any advice from student rooms (love the hypocracy?)

Maybe you should look into the UPDATED system now before you make such comments? From next academic year, the system will be altered in such a way, that non-Londoners will get more of a chance in the allocation system. It used to be random IN THE FIRST BALLOT, that is right, although due to the many problems experienced with that, it is subject to change.
