Hey, I can't find a thread for people applying to start in September 2010 so thought I'd start one up
I'm applying to do International Politics and am applying for the scholarship because I got great AS grades (way better than I expected! ) and personally like the sound of having £3000 and an unconditional offer! Makes exams that bit less stressful.
If you think you're going to apply for 2010 then come on and tell us all what you're going to be doing
Hey, I also want to apply for International Politics, either that or something else Politics related. I'm not sure if they will accept me because of my AS grades (even though my predicted grades should be fine if I can persuade my tutor of this!) but I'll see, I really hope so as I have fell in love with the course and place.
I thought the scholarships are seperate exams? so would your AS results make a difference? .. not sure about all this, so confusing!
Are going to the open day on the 17th? I was going to go to another Uni but I am changing my mind ...
Ooh awesome another Politics person I can't imagine your AS grades should be a problem, go and speak to the staff about it if you go to the open day if it's worrying you, they'll give you tonnes of advice. But I really doubt it'd be a problem at all
And yeah the scholarship is a separate exam and isnt affected by AS but I just decided to do it because my AS were way better than I expected and was told by my tutor that my results indicated I could do well enough to qualify.
I might go to the open day if I've got enough money and time to get there, problem is it's so awkward to get to!
I'm applying for Life Sciences (which is basically a foundation year leading to any other biology course, for me hopefully biochem).
It's kind of my back up though. It would be almost at the top of my prefences for my 5 choices if my little sister didn't already go there. That kind of puts it in the middle (not because we don't get on, but because we do! I don't want to end up inadvertantly cramping her style!)
It's a nice town though, visited last week (the town, not the uni though) and it's really lovely, especially down by the seafront, if a bit windy! And I heard someone speaking Welsh in Boots! I'd love to go somewhere I can learn Welsh.

I might do that, I don't think I will have a problem with the grades/points after retakes but I'm not the most predictable candidate. It's really my tutor I worry about.
Ah, yeah it seems worth doing anyway, I would do it if I get an offer.
I agree about the awkwardness but I think I need to see it before I get too attached.
Aberystwyth is awesome! I started here a couple of weeks ago and I've been having a great time!
I would definitely recommend taking the scholarship exams, I managed to get a merit award by taking one, which gave me £1000 for the first year and an unconditional offer!
For those doing Interpol, a few of my friends are also doing that and are finding it great!
I’m a member of the university and I’m here on the Student Room and Facebook to answer any of your questions about Aberystwyth University. Want to know anything about the courses, social life or applying, just ask away, and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
From Monday, our Aberystwyth University Application 2010 group will be active on Facebook. I’ll post the link on here.
Joining will allow you to stay up to date with the latest applicants news, and another place to connect with your fellow applicants.
Regards,
AberInsider.
Forgot to add; I'm Jamie, a second year student at the university. When answering questions, I'll remember to add my name, as you'll most likely get either Becky or myself answering them for you.
Hi,
I'm a second year student at Aberystwyth, and also a student ambassador for the uni, I just thought I'd answer some of the things you seem to be unsure about.
*Grades and Offers*
AS grades aren't usually a problem, I was quite dissappointed with mine but managed to do well in my A levels without chaining myself to my desk and books!
Also Aberystwyth are quite sympathetic about grades, they're willing to take on people who've slightly missed their offer if Aberystwyth is your firm choice: http://www.aber.ac.uk/en/undergrad/qualifications/
*Transport*
As far as transport goes, I'm not going to lie, it is awkward, but I've found the journey seems to get quicker the more you do it! From Birmingham it takes just over 3hours to get to Aber, trains run every two hours most days from twenty past six in the morning (!) The other thing to bear in mind is that at Dovey Junction (3 stops from Aber) the train splits in half, half goes to Aber, half goes North, but when someone comes round to check your ticket you can make sure you're on the right half. Here's another little link for you: http://www.arrivatrainswales.co.uk/W...t.aspx?id=5954
*New Applicants Facebook Group*
Also, if any of you have facebook, the group which is currently 'Aberystwyth fresher's 2009' will be changing (I think on Monday) to an Applicants 2010 group, feel free to join and meet other people who are applying to Aberystwyth.
The facebook group will also have information about open days and scholarship application deadlines, and you will be able to chat to Jamie and I, the student ambassadors, to find out about life at Aber.
Hope something in this essay is useful to you!
Beccy
Thanks for the information. I will definitely join the Facebook Group, it will give me a reason to actually use my account.
I'm not really too worried about getting the grades (though will be hard work) it's really getting an offer I am intensely paranoid about not getting, which with a subject like International Politics I imagine would get a lot of applicants. ... but enough with my drama.
SiobhanC - Yes, scholarships are separate exams which anyone can take, as long as you apply for them before 15th January 2010. The university asks that you sit two exams in two different subjects, during February, at either the university or your school/college.
I'd really recommend going for one, as if you’re successful in the exams, being awarded an entrance scholarship or merit award gives you a guaranteed place at the university, as well as being a great help to your finances!
Thanks so much for all the advice and help, it's really nice to know there are people around who are willing you answer your questions and inform you on what you need to know
I want to sit the Scholarship exams at Aber even though my college are willing, mainly because I've not yet been to the University and would really like to experience it. Do you know what the experience of sitting scholarship exams at Aber is like and what happens in way of accomodation?
***Aberystwyth University Applicants 2010 ---- NOW ACTIVE***
Just to let you all know, there is now a Facebook group set up for new applicants to the university. Here, you will be able to ask questions and connection with current applicants, as well as being kept up to date with academic/application related events going on at the university.
It is run by Beccy and I, so you can be sure you’re getting first hand information from a current student!
Good luck with your exams and such. Aber's a great place, really worth it. I consider myself extremely lucky to be here, what with the fiasco of last year's A Levels (I did no work whatsoever and somehow passed - a habit I'm happy to say I'm kicking).
The scholarship exams can be sat at either your school/college or at the university... best to check with your school/college first, but most are usually fine with you sitting them there.
Unfortunately, you won’t be able to stay in university accommodation, as its term time and us students are still living there There is however plenty of hotels and B&Bs located in town, should you need them.
From what I've seen/heard of the exams, they are quite general in the subjects, so as long as you do plenty of research, you stand a good chance of doing well.
hey! im applying to study law at aber. visited in the summer and absolutly loved it would love to be accepted. the area is soo nice even the sea front in the wind!! hopefully get accepted with my predicted grades
SiobhanC - When I wrote my personal statement, I looked at online and in the prospectus at how Aberystwyth had described my course, and then picked out key-words from that to use in the statement. It worked for me!
I just babbled. I don't recommend that, I was asked about some of the things I wrote down and I had to create a backstory on the spot, trying to look confident while my brain screamed in terror. Nearly fainted after my interview.
