Are there any good UK domain registrars that aren't apart of United Internet umbrella? It seems all the popular 1and1, Fasthosts, etc all fall under it. I'd probably go with them but I'm not giving them my credit card details and certainly not signing any contractual arrangements with them via my Paypal.

I'd preferably like one that is UK based, accepts Paypal, are easy to cancel and don't try and charge me automatically after a year. I'll probably go for http://www.cobaltweb.co.uk/ as my web host as I've heard good things.

They're my ISP and I can vouch for their reliability and customer service department.

Couple that I'd add

Auto responders

Aweber $1 trial http://www.aweber.com
Get response $1 trial

Web hosting & domain name
One £9 per year http://www.one.com

Also a great resource in creating a website is the free Create Your First Website By 3:45 ebook & Success Grenade Newsletter http://www.createyour1stmoneymakingwebsite.com

Try GoDaddy, they are very good. If you want quality hosting, then try them.
I think you should add 000webhost to free hosting, I've been with them for ages and they're fine, much better free resources than the one listed on here.
I've recently started two WordPress sites using NearlyFreeSpeech.net, the process was simple (they provided host-specific instructions) and the cost is very very low, about $0.03 per day at the moment!

Hi,
I am looking for information about website testing tools and this thread is really great for novices like me. How about adding performance testing tools and other similar tools?
Anyway, maybe you guys have any suggestions for other easy to use tools or sites for beginner website designers?
Thanks, Suzanne

Google Analytics is a great starting point, it's free, relatively easy to use and has some very powerful tools.
You might want to add "Optinom.com" as a registrar. That's where I always buy .com and .net domains. I find it's one of the cheapest for .com and .net and provides a very good service. £5.98 per year.

Don't know if these have been recommended but site5.com and vidahost.com are both great companies.

Here are some excellent resources to get you started in:

Programming:
Java:
How to Think like a Computer Scientist with Java (Introduces you to programming and computer science, using Java)
C:
Harvard's Introduction Computer Science (Introduces you to programming and computer science, using C)

Web Development:
Don't Fear the Internet (Quick rundown of HTML and CSS for beginners)
and
w3c Community Wiki (HTML, CSS, JavaScript)
followed by
Harvard's course on "Building Dynamic Websites" (PHP, SQL, a variety of web issues) ---the 2009 version has notes for those who wanna skip the video lectures.

There are two new organizations that offer free online courses (complete with lecture videos and graded assignments), including introductory Computer Science/Programming courses:
http://www.udacity.com
http://www.coursera.org

Last, but not least, there is also MIT's OCW and in particular, MIT OCW Scholar.

There are, of course, a number of other resources you can find online, but after my own analysis of many of them, these are the most polished and seem to promote the best practices in their respective topics.

It is easy to become overwhelmed with the amount of resources at your disposal, which can prevent you from learning anything at all. My recommendation is to pick just one or two links that suit your style of learning and go through them completely until you master the material contained and move on. You really can't go wrong with any of them.

Have any questions? Before asking for help, try to figure it out by yourself first (It is essential to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills, in the digital as well as the real world), and then ask.
Unsure if it has been mentioned, but if any of you are stuck for a (free) hosting service, I use http://1freehosting.com

Was about to buy a domain from 123 reg, I always use them for domains but it asked me to pay to simply have my WHOIS info private :s-smilie:
Does anyone know which sites will allow me to have it private for free.

That's fairly standard practice I'm afraid. Some registrars offer this service free for up to a year (or possibly as part of a more expensive bundle), but in the long term it's something you'll probably end up paying for.
