That's fairly standard practice I'm afraid. Some registrars offer this service free for up to a year (or possibly as part of a more expensive bundle), but in the long term it's something you'll probably end up paying for.

I've never had to pay in the past. Is it because all the past domains I've bought have been .co.uk whereas the one I am now going to buy is a .com?
I normally use 123reg but its quite expensive when including the whois privacy, having had a bit of a browse Namecheap is the cheapest. Have you ever used them and would recommend them?

I've decided to put together a thread bringing together all the resources used within web design and development. I won't cover them all alone as there are hundreds and hundreds out there many of which offer similar functionality. This thread isn't going to make reference to where you can learn languages but more make reference to tools that will help you with your design and development.

Check this website daily for great deals: https://stacksocial.com/

I have recently bought some great bundles and it also has free bundles you can access simply by sharing a few links on social media sites.

For $7 you can have: https://stacksocial.com/sales/the-name-your-own-price-front-end-master-bundle

That is less than £5 going to charity and you get access to loads of lectures on web development. It's silly not to take advantage of these sorts of deals if you're seriously interested in becoming a developer.

SkillShare is another great website. If you can find a bundle that includes this then grab it as fast as you can. This site is fantastic. I got it as part of a bundle and it is the best investment I have ever made and wholeheartedly recommend it. It features everything from design to development to lectures on things that will improve your life: confidence, motivation, etc.

For those that are ready to delve further into the world of design and development here is an even larger list from GitHub.

Hey pseudocode,

I like your username btw.

This thread is good, though it may well fit in with the stickied thread at the top of this sub-forum: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1060570

I'm not that au fait with webmaster stuff (I'm tech support and data analysis). Do you think it'd be beneficial for everyone if this is added to that thread?

Thanks!

Please place OpenShift (RedHat PaaS) on that list under Free/Paid hosting. https://openshift.com/
digitalocean.com is a good VPS provider
