Default Should I Put On a Scottish Accent?

hey guys.

Im in the process of applying to Edinburgh (and my other unis) and Ive reached that point where theres nothing left to do but wait, so at this point Im just killing time talking about university because I cant get it off my mind and worrying about offers. hence this thread.

So I am American, but I am endlessly fascinated with Scotland (hence my Edinburgh application) and, (like most americans believe it or not) with the scottish accent.

So Im wondering what you think. If I go to Edinburgh (fingers crossed!) I am thinking of speaking in a Scottish accent the entire time I am there. Now I have a talent for accents, so I can assure you in a few months you wouldnt be able to tell me apart from any of you, but what would you think if you found out?

I figured it would be a cool way to experience having a Scottish accent for four years, and it would help me blend into the native atmosphere, but I also recognize that some might see it as being ingenuine or trying to be someone Im not.

What do you think?

I'd think you were weird for putting on a fake accent.

The Edinburgh accent is fairly dull and monotone anyway (I have it just incase anyone gets offended) You will fit in here with any accent tbh.

Bit odd and I don't think you could pull it off. Even if you could some of the vocabulary we use here in Scotland is not really known anywhere outside of Scotland.

I don't think you should, being american will help you stand out from the crowd instead of just blending in. Also you might not actually have a convincing accent, just one that Americans etc might think is real.

You could, because it would be hilarious.

You'll just have to bear in mind that for the first three days people will be like "oh he's Scottish, cool" and then you'll get heinously drunk at some point during freshers, forget to put on your fake accent and slip back into American.

And for three/four years you will be "that American weirdo who tried to do a fake accent".

I found it rather amusing that you've even considered it let alone being able to pull it off. There's no need to be fake so just relax and be yourself! People will love the American accent.

But hey, while were on the topic, are you guys (Scots and Englishmen alike) fascinated with the American accent like we are with the Scottish/English/Irish/Australian accents?

I'd find it rather funny. I'd probably think you're a wierdo for it though and I now lots who would take offence over it. It will be seen right through

And just for the record, I love american accents! Oooh, Irish accents make me weak at the knees...

Only really in isolation. When there is one American/Irish/Australian accent in a crowd, it really draws my attention*, when I hear it for example in a film where the majority speak with an American accent, I tune it out.

*Hence why I think it would be a bit silly to then try and fit in with said crowd.
