Anything at all about the Netherlands!
Hi, if anyone has anything about the Netherlands then please please please let me know!
I've just found out that I know more than I thought I did but it's not much and if anyones got any websites or anything it would be greatly appreciated!
Also - can anyone tell me if there will definately be a question on the first and second revolts? Just the first part of the topic?
Anyone who shares my pain?

If you do mean the revolts of the 1570s-and-around-that-time then I do have a few notes on them, but they are mainly from Elizabeth's perspective, eg 'should I intervene or not' sort of thing, so I don't think that would be very useful for you really. If you want, and if I get chance later I'll see if I can post something. Good luck with the exam both of you - I'm sure you'll be fine.

I'll just assume you're doing philip and type up an essay plan about it - the one I have is 'how far was religion the primary cause of the Dutch revolt?'
key factors here are defense of privileges, religion and economic issues
-defense of privileges
hist debate: williams vs geyl (williams emphasises privilege, geyl religion)
-example of protection of privileges in 1559 when EG only agreed to grant nine years aid if spanish troops were withdrawn from netherlands
-outrage over heresy laws - not just religious, also invasion of liberties - can link with fears of span inquisition being implemented.
-hostility to alba potentially because of invasion of liberties? especially unpopular was the council of troubles, tried and executed 1100ppl
-link with mismanagement
-alienation of the great nobles
-pacification of ghent in 1576 emphasised ancient privileges of the provinces
-religion
wedgewood&geyl emphasise importance of this factor
-1565, philips letters of the woods in segovia - philip's unwillingness to compromise in the religious aspect meant netherlands got irritated..
-Iconoclastic fury, 1566 occurred despite the moderation being issued which relaxed heresy laws-> you can look at this either way depending on your argument. either that the depth of their religious feeling was so great that they weren't satisfied with the moderation or that this suggests that defense of privileges was the real factor as they should have been appeased by the moderation
-activities of sea beggers, 1572, suggests religious aspect. the group of calvinist exiles seized the port of brill and citizens persuaded town councils to open their gates to the beggers ->links w/calvinism
-finance
only a supporting factor, not driving.
-success of sea beggers was also contributed to b/c the towns supporting them were also hostile to the implementation of the 10th penny, alba/s new tax
-1576 - spanish fury destroyed spain's credibility in the north. spanish troops killed over 6000 in antwerp, destroying spain's credibility in the north. this precipitated the pacification of ghent
hope this helps!
