Medicine at edinburgh, why is it so impossible to get into?
Discussion of individual medical schools and their courses for applicants and current students. Not for all those 'Am I Good Enough' questions.

Medicine at edinburgh, why is it so impossible to get into?
I'm studying my ASs at the minute, and would love to study medicine at Edinburgh, but when i mention this to any careers teacher all i get is that it is not recommended as it is so difficult to be accepted. Anyone know why it is so impossible to get into, and anyone who is there now have any tips on actually getting accepted?
cheers

Re: Medicine at edinburgh, why is it so impossible to get into?
You could probably find 130 (or however big each year cohort is) people who would disagree with your tutors. I guess if you can meet the entrance requirements academically, and get some work experience under your belt, then why not apply if its where you want to go

Re: Medicine at edinburgh, why is it so impossible to get into?
They don't interview so you have to look amazing on paper. This usually means having at least AAA predictions and excellent GCSE results. In fact I think they state te average applicant has 6A*s but the top 350 or so have 8-11 A*s. You also need to have a welll developed personal statement with a very good range of EC's and some solid work experience/caring work.
It's difficult not impossible though

Re: Medicine at edinburgh, why is it so impossible to get into?I would agree with this especially the bolded bit.. from looking at applicant results quite a few of them got rejected due to "insufficient ECs". Maybe it's because we tend to leave most of it to be talked about at the interview (for our other choices) instead of including more in our PS(Original post by bob9001)

I'm not sure
I'm sure it's more possible than some would think - as long as you're ready to put in the effort to look pretty damn good on paper (not that you don't have to do this already!). -
Re: Medicine at edinburgh, why is it so impossible to get into?
I got 10A* in my GCSEs and have shown an interest in voluntary work throughout school, i also took up a care working job over the summer to show an exploration into medicine, something asked for on edinburgh's website, but despite this my careers teacher is adament that Edinburgh is near impossible for me. thanks for replying, you've made me feel better than the ones in school

Re: Medicine at edinburgh, why is it so impossible to get into?
very famous med-school
no interview
subsidised fees for all of uk, besides england
...all of these lead to a HUGE influx of applicants

Re: Medicine at edinburgh, why is it so impossible to get into?
On the Times website, there's an article about applying to edinburgh and how they select applicants (more detail than edinburgh's website). It says they use a point system and points are awarded to people with AAA predicted, over 6A* GCSE, where you live and whether your parents have been to higher ed.
This was for eng Lit though, so could be different for med?Last edited by ScrubZ; 21-10-2009 at 23:03. -

Re: Medicine at edinburgh, why is it so impossible to get into?Unfortunately, your careers tutor is right. Edinburgh is an absolute gamble for even the very best applicants.(Original post by oliviab)

Re: Medicine at edinburgh, why is it so impossible to get into?
title makes no sense, because over 200 applicants prove you wrong every year.
On a good note, I think you have a good chance (Oliviad that is). Yes, the no interview bit is a bit worrying to some people, but no matter how the medical school decides to choose between the applicants, it's always going to favour some over others, depending on what they focus on, eg. GCSEs, extra curriculars etcs. Edinburgh is no harder to get into than most other medical schools.....which is hard but NOT impossible. -
Re: Medicine at edinburgh, why is it so impossible to get into?agreed.(Original post by RollerBall)
I can't beleive they actualy do that. Openly discriminate to those that don't live in Scotland or weather your parents have been to higher education. That is awfull.
also cant stand the way they discriminate to those who ave the time to get 6A*s at school.
PS what evil kind of parents call their kids Olivia/Livy these days? man, thse evils.Last edited by Gizmo!; 20-11-2009 at 17:03. -
Re: Medicine at edinburgh, why is it so impossible to get into?
the vast majority (probably like 99%, for years, i'd be willing to bet my mortgage on it) are from the more well to do areas of england and scotland.
aint none from Toxteth and Tooting, macca, in the great tradition of their last fifty years, i'm sure.
