The Student Room Group

Good Film and Tv production courses.

Hi there fellow students! im new in the room. basically looking for some advice on film and tv based courses. Im looking for a good course, with good resources, and opportunities to go abroad, in good citys, so not too much to ask then!

im currently looking at newport wales for documentary film and tv, and film and video. as well as both york and york st john for film and tv production. and finally westminster uni for film an tv production.

any one on these courses got any advice? or any advice about other good unis to look at.

In particular im rating places on facilities, relevant job opportunities, study abroad options, good music and pub scene, and accommodation (i.e places with at least sofas in the communal living rooms! i had to sleep on some of those waiting room style chairs in a mates communal area the other day in nottingham the other day, it was not fun)

any adivice would be great and really appreciated! thanks guys.
hey apparently westminister isnt very good.
york st johns seems to be very popular and loved by students
bournemouth is like the one well known uni's, south hampton solent looks good too
for film and television im currently looking for next year so any other help here would be brilliant
Glamorgan is a really good place to study Media Courses, they have a very modern large building dedicated to it. It's called the AtRiUM, and it's in the centre of Cardiff, a great place to live.

So yeah, take a look at their courses:

I'm not sure if you know how the films and media departments are viewed in the UK - but Westminster is probably one of the leaders - especially in research - a massive 60% in the top 4* of research output and esteem for communication, cultural and media studies (which includes film studies) , no other department even comes close to this.

Correct Baker02, but if you look at the following video; I think Westminster leads:

I posted the below in another forum - so I'll repost here:

Westminster for anything Media, arts, journalism and film related is renowned (top in the UK for research by a massive mile) - not sure if you have seen the video on this page, but have a watch.

Not sure about LCC (part of the UAL I believe) - though why don't you have a look at both the sub forums in London uni's. I know LCC has been having some troubles with finances and cutting or slimming down many of its courses and Westminster is having some trouble with threatened job cuts (see the blog below):

However, these pressures are common now for most universities in the UK due to the current climate - but it is important to ask questions about any potential cuts as they can severely affect the quality of your education and student experience - so have a quick read and note any concerns down.

You really need to visit and ask questions and do this soon to get a feel for the environment, facilities and what they can offer you - this is so important and I think this will make things easier for you. Hope all this helps.

Good luck.
i was talking more from what ive heard from peoples opinions of the place rather than the reputation in the industry. Also ive been looking from a technical view rather than theory and researched based.
but thats helpful the links.

Yes - but from good theory and research, coupled with strong industry contacts and links results in most of the graduates going on to do great things in the industry (as the video showed) - even I was shocked at how so many Westminster graduates have been involved in a big way
in so many films and media/music type productions etc.

Best thing anyone can do in this situation is to visit themselves, do the research and ask loads of questions when they visit and look around.
yeah which is obvisouly a thing you should do anywhere.
personally i never felt anything great from the place and also i wanted a uni from out of london since i live there and its major expensive.
