Default Internet in Halls

I am thinking of applying to Leicester and wanted to know what the connection in halls is like. I am a gamer, and wanted to know if xbox live works.
Also, do they implement stupidly low limits like 1GB a week or something similar.

Thanks in advance.

Start here and see what you can find out. It looks like you won't be able to use Xbox Live because it uses its own protocols and not normal Web protocols.

xbox live works fine, my flatmate plays it all the time

everything works fine on the internet, iplayer etc. and theres no limits

the only downside is that you cant download p2p, so no bittorrent, limewire etc.

btw im basing this on john foster, not sure if all the halls are the same

Ok thanks for clearing that up. Their site must be out of date. So have any idea as to what constitutes as excessive usage?

We can do pretty much anything in GMS, just need to use common sense; no iPlayer without a license, excessive porn/p2p etc.

No. You don't need a tv license to watch iplayer. You only need one to watch LIVE tv.

I don't know if they are trying to scare you but seriously, if you watch something on iplayer or 4oD etc AFTER IT HAS BEEN SCREENED, you don't need a,license, honest.

If you use the BBC iPlayer to watch TV programmes at the same time as they are being shown on TV (live) then you will need to be covered by a valid TV Licence. You can buy a TV Licence online.
If you use the BBC iPlayer to watch BBC programmes after they have been broadcast either to download or via streaming on demand then you will not need a TV Licence.

Xbox - Last year you had to ring up support for them to allow you to use your Xbox, you just needed to give them it's MAC address and soon enough you'd be able to use it.

Limit - There was a limit of 2 Gig a week. I clocked up 30 one week and got disconnected, simple phone call to get reconnected and got told to not do it again. No idea how strict they are generally.

iPlayer - Nothing illegal about it, literally everyone does it (Not that it changes its legality). iPlayer does allow you to watch live TV as well so just avoid doing that.

I might be moving to JFH and I heard that the internet is slow. This'd be a real pain for me. Does any one have any experience of this?

the internet in jofo (currently here now) isnt slow at all, unless watching HD videos or iplayer during a peak time (e.g. 7pm-11pm) other than that its perfect for everything you would ever need and has no limit on bandwith. the only downside is for downloading p2p (ie. bittorrent and limewire) for these you have to take your laptop to the jofo bar and use there inceredibly fast (700kb per second) wireless speed to download things! me and my mate managed to download an episode of heroes there in 10 minutes, back home with my direct broadband connection it still takes an hour or so, so really its fantastic

I'm in Jofo, and the internet is . . . passable. For most of the day it's fine, then it hits about 6pm and suddenly flatlines. Hard to milk 30kb/s out of it.

It could be worse, but it could similarly be much better.

I was just told by an email from John Foster that the internet was upraded this week... is this true?

I'm still getting a very slow speed (barely 50 KB/s), a far cry from the 4mbit promised.

The internet in JoFo has generally been pretty good, expecially in the middle of the day. Having said that, this week the connection keeps being interupted, which is starting to get annoying!! Maybe its because of this upgrade Nil.Recurring??

Perhaps, the interruption did start this week.

But I just can't see how its been upgraded, at all. Right now, its 11:30 AM, and I'm downloading a file from Apple at only 80 KB/s. This is just a 1mbit connection - something we had before the supposed 'upgrade'.

I remember the upgrade was supposed to be 4mbit and 20mbit if you paid up. 4mbit connection would imply that I get download speeds of 400 to 500 KB/s, but I've never seen such speeds in John Foster, even early in the morning when no one else is using the internet. At peak times, I'm lucky to get about 30 KB/s, which is just ridiculous.

It's not good at the moment, during freshers it was better, people were going out more etc at peak times it's bad now (i'm in Beaumont). If it has been upgraded I have not noticed. Between 6-12 it's real slow. I wonder if MW2's release has had an effect? - I know some people can't play it at Uni but I know people in JF who can.

I can confirm that OSV was being upgraded this week, but I believe that was for the installation of managed HP switches.

Nixon Court and Freeman’s common will experience some downtime next week and that will be in order to supply a 4mb and 20mb service.
