Measles is caused by a very infectious virus. Nearly everyone who catches it will have a fever, a rash and generally be unwell. Children often have to spend about five days in bed and could be off school for ten days. Adults are likely to be ill for longer. It is not possible to tell who will be seriously affected by measles. The complications of measles affect one in every 15 children. The complications include chest infections, fits, swelling of the brain, and brain damage. In very serious cases, measles kills.
Measles is one of the most infectious diseases known and the chances are that growing up you will get measles if you're not protected.
What is MMR?
MMR is the combined vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella. It is the safest protection against these diseases.
When and when is the vaccine given?
The MMR vaccine contains weakened versions of live measles, mumps and rubella viruses. Because the viruses are weakened, people who have recently had the vaccine cannot infect other people and the vaccine cannot infect them.
The vaccine is injected into the muscle of the thigh or upper arm.

I wouldn't say that one person's experience of having MMR is enough to say it is bad.
The statistics show that after one dose 90-95% of people have the antibodies to protect against all three illnesses. After two doses more than 99% of people are protected.
But that does mean a tiny number of people don't respond to the vaccination and it could be that you are sadly one of them. But then I think this is something in common with most/all vaccinations.
But I do also personally know mumps is not pleasant having had when younger (before the MMR vaccine was introduced) so anything one can do to avoid someone getting it or measles or rubella is worth trying.
And going back to those people who may reamain unprotected, there is a benfit to you from other nost other people being vaccinated as it means the disease will be seen much less often in society and so reduce your chances of coming in to contact with it.

actually you should have 3 shots. 2 in childhood, and one in teenage years as a booster.
remember though, just because you didn't respond to one component (the mumps bit) doesn't mean you won't be protected against the others (measles and rubella).
Re: Have you had the MMR vaccine? Find all you need to know here.
I've had the jab. I remember getting one when I was about 15 and I think I got one when I was younger. I don't really think much about them. You can only get them once right?
Re: Have you had the MMR vaccine? Find all you need to know here.
MMR wasn't in existence when I was a child so I haven't had it. I also have an allergy to eggs which has complicated matters, in addition to which I respond badly in general to vaccinations - it complicated matters with respect to exotic holidays as the required vaccinations invariably resulted in me being ill (with more than 'mild flu like symptoms').
That said, I'm a medical freak anyway - I'm allergic to so many meds it's unreal!
Re: Have you had the MMR vaccine? Find all you need to know here.
I've had the full jab, still ended up with mumps a year or two back though I like the MMR vaccine as much as I like any vaccine involving needles so not a massive amount but as necessary I've had all the jabs AFAIK

Natural immunity is higher risk than vaccination.
If vaccines should boost immunity however it makes people more suspecible to catching the illness they are trying to prevent.
Vaccines pose an higher risk. If people knew what is in vaccines they won't take it.
The ingredients in vaccines include MERCURY (any mercury in human's body is poisonous - creating more harm than good). Vaccines also have squalene;
ethylene glycol which is antifreeze and other more.
By boosting ones' natural immunity is much better...by eating healthy, having lots of vitamin D3, exercising, trying to reduce sugar intake and getting plenty of sleep.
btw..i have the MMR vaccine & rebooster - got ill from both. That encouraged me to do research into vaccines and now i make informed decisions.

Utter rubbish.

How do you know it creates more harm than good? How many people per hundred thousand get mercury poisoning (or indeed a side effect related to any other chemical) compared to how many people per hundred thousand are saved serious illness?

Sorry but I seriously doubt that the side effects from the vaccines were anywhere near as bad as the actual diseases.
My parents chose not to give me and my brother any vaccines when we were younger. My brother got measles a while ago and he was really ill. I did my own research and it seems like, in my opinion, the argument against vaccines is a load of crap being preached by paranoid parents who don't even know what they're talking about. I went to the doctor myself last year and got all the vaccinations I'd missed out on. I'd much rather be safe than sorry. And I'd trust qualified doctors and scientists over anti-vaccine groups any day.

Never had a serious reaction to a vaccine then? Believe me, they do happen! I missed 2 weeks of school after the last one I had...not fun! As with ANY medication, there will always be a minority of people who for what ever reason cannot have the vaccination/s or react badly to it/them.

Yep, but the incidence and overall severity of these reactions is less than the incidence of the disease being vaccinated against.

In general the reactions ARE less severe...I guess I'm just pointing out that there are a few of us for whom the vaccinations present a more serious threat than the illnesses themselves.
I get fed up with being labelled paranoid and uninformed and my parents likewise because there are several of the childhood vaccinations that I haven't had and still refuse to have. As a scientist, sweeping generalisations make my blood boil - the minority has to be acknowledged, even when it's tiny. Would those who slate all of us who have very severe reactions to vaccinations be equally dismissive if the reaction was to penicillin? There are some paranoid people out there, I just loath being tarred with the same brush.

There's a difference between making a health decision based on evidence and confusing the issues by completely misunderstanding the risks (GBS and 'flu vaccine for a classic example).

I know that people can have severe reactions, but this is incredibly rare, and what the person I was referring to had was not a severe reaction.
