Re: The Field Hockey SocietyI'd heard about that - including urban myths about expat boys being made to play in skirts at school because of certain ridiculous rules.(Original post by Baltimoron)
Serious question, and I don't mean to make fun of anyone but, do guys actually play field hockey in the UK? In the States, field hockey is almost strictly reserved for females. A guy would seriously get made fun of here if he said he played field hockey.
It's a very popular sport for men and women across Europe and beyond (notably India, Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand etc). It gained popularity here as a winter sport for cricketers in the 19th century. God knows how or why it's reserved for women in the US. Probably because only 1 member of each team is covered head to toe in padding and it isn't interrupted every 5 minutes for advertising and power plays!
I play fullback these days for Sussex uni - playing in the BUCS leagues. I'll have to join a local team wherever I am when I graduate this May!Last edited by Rainy; 14-02-2010 at 14:12. -
Re: The Field Hockey SocietyI imagine you might be able to find some online streams on Google but the quality will be so poor it won't be worth the effort. Hockey's a hard sport to follow on a TV with crystal clear display, imagine how difficult it would be to watch it on a crappy blurry video stream.(Original post by Atherilia)
Is there a way one can watch the Hockey World Cup without Sky etc. I really want to go to india to watch but alas school calls.
EDIT: I have heard it is the world cup, and the commonwealth games, which is it? -
Re: The Field Hockey Society
Is anyone going to follow the world cup in india, telegraph are streaming the matches live http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/othersports/hockey/

Re: The Field Hockey SocietyThat's how I started off, in fact I still am like that but I view myself primarily as a defender as nobody seems to want to play there. Also, I'm an awesome defender.(Original post by SirMasterKey)
There's the Hockey World Cup and the Commonwealth games this year, both in India as well.
I hope Uni does make me a better player and I can find out my real position as still at the moment for school I just get put where needed really.
Utility players are the most under-rated people on a hockey team. -
Re: The Field Hockey SocietyWith me it's onlt because I started properly last January and that team had players who had set positions and this year same thing. I'm a forced Utility player really.(Original post by Al_Funcoot)

I thought I was quite good in defence. My best game in my opinian last season was when I played left-back. The teacher was impressed as well as he said 'Can play on the wing or at the back'
Which part of defence do you enjoy the most? -
Re: The Field Hockey SocietySame thing happened to me when I started back in 2005, the team I started off in had people who knew where they played so I just said "I'll go wherever and you tell me what to do" and then it just developed from there. I traditionally play in defense but I did spend an entire season in central midfield. Man, I used to be so fit.(Original post by SirMasterKey)

The part of defence I enjoy the most? Do you mean positionally or the actual technical side of it? -
Re: The Field Hockey SocietyPositionally.(Original post by Al_Funcoot)

My fitness is worse this season, first game I was knackered after 5 minutes and was replaced after 20 through fatigue and injury.
Improved since
I have no idea about the techincal side of it, I was thrown right in the deep end as have only ever had the one school practise session. -
Re: The Field Hockey Society
CHAMPION EH CHAMPION EH OLE OLE OLE!
Sorry, my uni team won their league today
Positionally I've been at left back for a good long while now but I'll probably be making the move to centre back next year which will be a challenge I'll enjoy.
And to be honest mate, you must be really unfit if you're playing in defence and get knackered :P
As for technical skill, you pick up a lot from the people you play with. I've completely changed my hitting style since coming to uni, modelled it on the same backswing one of our midfielders use. It's improved my power and accuracy a lot

Re: The Field Hockey SocietyAgreed. Especially the last few minutes!(Original post by Atherilia)
That England Vs India Match
that was brilliant to watch!!!
In other news, I believe my college side should be staying up this season! So pumped for next year. (Only started this year so haven't quite grasped what I'm supposed to be doing) -
Re: The Field Hockey Society
I have a question
I've played hockey a few times just for fun, and I'm not too bad a dribbler (on one side) and my fundamentals in passing etc. are ok.
I can dribble well when I am to the left of the ball, but when I am to the right of it, and I want to move the ball left, I suck pretty badly because you have to twist your arms etc.. Does anyone have any tips on how to improve that technique (i have no idea what it's called... reverse dribble?). -
Re: The Field Hockey SocietyBrilliant and infuriating when Tindall missed a sitter he should've buried. Had all the time in the world to finish it.(Original post by Atherilia)

Anyway, England's match tomorow should be good! Will definitely be watching the defenders and picking up some tips
Uni hockey is all about the banter and the good times though.
