By a mutation, really? What makes you think that? Does that mean there may possibly be chances of gene mutation for other colours?.. Interesting..
I learnt a bit about it a uni. It's something to do with melanin I think

It's recessive. I actually think it might have been originally caused by a mutation.

All inheritable traits are originally caused by mutations. The human species is a result of mutation. Evolution = random mutation followed by selection of that mutation.

I have a thing for ginger haired guys

Tbh it's just another hair colour, I dont know why it has a stigma attached, that ginger people are ugly, I think its hawt on boys and girls :yep: And the fact it's not common makes it even better.

As for why its not common, go look it up in an A level biology book.
You answered everything except the question posed in this thread :p:

As someone above said, it was caused by mutation and is the recessive gene, hence it not being common.

Recessive genetics, coupled with the fact that ginger men tend not to get laid very often. Well, except by girls who fall into the below category:

Because your grammar is so bad?

And on top of that your user name is 'facetious'... the irony! :p:

Basically it's because the phenotype plays out in a recessive manner; the genetics are not quite as simple as it is made out at GCSE but I don't think you want a detailed biological explanation. Just that it's genetically rare explains it well enough.

no it's not, that's like saying black is just a skin colour about black people. ginger people have slightly different facial features and complexion, not saying it's less attractive but it's not just the hair.

    Right-o.

MC1R is the ginger gene, and it is recessive.

The red head is deteriorating due to ethnically mixed parenting, smaller families and the fact that many red heads are marrying people from outside their immediate area.

In a few generations the ginger gene could be bred out of existence completely.

    A few facts:

    Red-heads are 1% of the world's population.

Redheads are known for having lower pain thresholds, and feel both the heat and the cold more intensly. They are more likely to catch hypothermia, and burn from the sun's UV. They need higher doses of anaesthesia to acheive the same analgesic effect as others.

Yes I see what you're saying but facial features can vary a lot in people with red hair. More-so than your example of the black race.
Not all red heads are freckled, they can have different shaped features, look very different to each other etc.

Also the features of a ginger person can be identical to others of the white population (who may be pale, freckly, have the same nose, eyes, bone structure) whereas with ethnicities like africans or orientals, their features are pretty much exclusive to their race.

It was also meant to be a take on the OP's grammar.
