Re: Ask Powerlifter - Gents and gals of all goals welcome
Hi as of tonight I have decided to diet and slightly bulk mainly replacing some of my fat stores with muscle.
I am 16 stone 3 and 6ft 3 inch and 17 almost 18.
The main thing I want to use for my training is rowing. We have been luckily enough been given the use (in our living room) of a concept 2 rowing machine. I understand you may not use this equipment much or not for a long time but could you recommend any structured routine for it.
Diet side is quite simple for me. I eat a good varied diet but tooooo much fatty snacks and sugary things. Cutting these out and eating lots of pastas and lean meats ( I am a butcher ) should keep me going.

I am again also one of the only qualified personal trainers, powerlifitng, strongman and bodybuilding qualified judge/referee. My personal training was done in the military.
Again I have access to info that many others don’t being very close to a qualified dietician.
And as another string to my bow I have excelled at several sports, a little summary is below:
Shot Putt: Midlands champion U17, District Champion U17, 3rd in All England Championship U17
Boxing: 27 fights, 19 wins – 16 by way of KO, 2 draws, 6 losses – best result was semi finals in the ABA championships.
Rugby: Played professionally in the 1st division – tighthead prop, and once loosehead (played loose for the 2nds a few times too)
Powerlifting: Best lifts have been in the 110’s Squat: 380, Bench: 250, Deadlift: 330, also have done 300kg raw deadlift in comp and a 200kg raw bench press. I have also hit a 350 squat in just briefs and knee wraps (gym lift) and the same but 330kgs in comp.
Strongman: First show recently, 4 weeks training and managed 3rd Place in St Ives strongest man (intermediate comp) .
Right enough of the self glorification crap.
I get a lot of crap come through to my inbox shall we say, so here is an open offer to all.
I will happily give advice on diets, sports specific training and body sculpting (please note not bodybuilding as it were, not my bag lol) and health to give realistic and positive effects.
So, if you want this help please PM me with your situation. Please note two key things though:
1: I am not your mother, I will not do it all for you. Please read up on information available – some which is in my signature for the girls (and guys trying to loose to be fair). One of the key things to weight loss, power training or whatever is effort, so show some please!
2: I will be taking parts of messages and publically posting them, I will exclude names and compile a list of information for you guys for easy access.
You played professional rugby and take part in strongest man competitions...and you spend your time on TSR. WHY?
Do you have proof that you are actually who you claim to be?

Sure you were benching properly?
Bench press is one of those which varies by far too much to really give a great figure, that and because its a much lower lift it, by nature, is going to be a more inaccurate estimate. Its dependent on so many things, arm length, torso size, etc. Where as the deadlift/squat are less so, Im 5ft 11, 150lb but I deadlift 150 kg and squat 125, if even a weedy guy like me can get ok squats/deadlifts it should show you a fair amount about those lifts compared to the bench

Yes, and I was doing like 70kg for reps. I weighed about 73kg when I started.

Thanks for this thread.
To get ripped abs is it quicker and more effective to do
Cardio+Good Diet+Deadlifts
or
Cardio+Good diet+ab exercises (e.g. crunches, leg raises, jackknives etc)
Obv I don't mean just on their own as a full workout, but specifically for abs.

Some think that the Westside style of squat is the epitome of squatting but I've been looking at other people's raw squats and they are different: Kroc, Wendler et al all have very very different raw squat styles than that of what you find advertised in Westside articles.
IMO the westside squats are not squats as they are miles high, break at the knees first and keep the back as straight as possible
2) Do you think box squats are a useful lift for someone who is raw, medium stance and deep? I did them for a bit and they didn't seem to get good carryover to anything, not even deadlifting. Yet many say this is the exercise to use to improve your squat. Not over powercleans or simple pause squats
3) Do you cringe when you see 'world records' from the back yard American feds, complete with squat to 3" above parallel, benches not locked out and knees not locked out on the deadlift (which is a lower weight than their bench press)? Yes, infact it pisses me off when I see any high squat, and the BPC are mega guilty of it!
