Default Alan Johnson: Labour has made mistakes on immigration

http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2...on-immigration

"Whilst I accept that governments of both persuasions, including this one, have been maladroit in their handling of this issue, I do believe that the UK is now far more successful at tackling immigration than most of its European and North American neighbours,"

This is vastly in contrast to : http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...osing-cap.html

'I do not lie awake at night worrying about a population of 70 million.

BNP article : http://bnp.org.uk/2009/11/not-maladr...st-malevolent/

The admission by Labour apparatchik Andrew Neather in the Evening Standard that mass immigration was a premeditated Labour plot to “rub the Right’s nose in diversity” has forever closed off the conspirators’ defence of diminished responsibility for the manslaughter of the British nation.

Why the change in approach I wonder? Rising BNP support, perhaps?

Just for good measure :
He joined the Labour Party in 1971, although he considered himself a Marxist ideologically aligned with the Communist Party of Great Britain.

The Guardian article has Johnson arguing that whilst Labour haven't been perfect on immigration and have struggled to deal with a surge in people from conflict zones, they have broadly done quite and been the first government to track people coming in and out. The Mail article has Johnson saying he won't be losing sleep over population fears. Both appear to have a "we haven't been perfect but have done pretty well, and immigrants have made great economic contributions" tone which seems fair enough to me.

They've made mistakes but they don't want to change anything...

Sounds like something to placate those concerned about immigration, i'd bet a lot of money Johnson won't act on his words though.

I don't understand why English people complain so much. In Dubai, the native population is 20%, here it is 90% and already the BNP is making gains.

What does that say actually?

Of course, his actual opinion on the matter has changed very little, but the spin that is being put out, and his focus on the acceptance of immigration related problems, is more apologetic and suggesting they are tougher on immigration, no doubt because of rising BNP support. He won't be making comments like " I won't lose any sleep over immigration" anymore.

The immigration system was toughened up in 05/06 with the introduction of a points based system and has been getting gradually tougher since then. As far as I can see, his basic point is the same - "we've done well, made a few mistakes perhaps but it really isn't that much of an issue" - I wouldn't be surprised if he made the same comment again.
