Re: Alan Johnson: Labour has made mistakes on immigration

The Guardian article has Johnson arguing that whilst Labour haven't been perfect on immigration and have struggled to deal with a surge in people from conflict zones, they have broadly done quite and been the first government to track people coming in and out. The Mail article has Johnson saying he won't be losing sleep over population fears. Both appear to have a "we haven't been perfect but have done pretty well, and immigrants have made great economic contributions" tone which seems fair enough to me.
Of course, his actual opinion on the matter has changed very little, but the spin that is being put out, and his focus on the acceptance of immigration related problems, is more apologetic and suggesting they are tougher on immigration, no doubt because of rising BNP support. He won't be making comments like " I won't lose any sleep over immigration" anymore.
