Could I have some word/phrase structure tree help plase?
I find them really hard to do, but I have lots of examples and think I'm starting to get there, but for homework we've had to make up our own example sentences and word tree them. My sentence begins 'My favourite' and I have that down as an N' and an Adj, which then makes an N', (as in N' -> Adj N') and the only way I can see to build on that is to do a NP (NP -> Det N') but I don't have a Det Can I just have a blank one, because one of my examples (from the lecture) begins 'angry men' and that's been split off much the same way, with 'angry' as the Adj and men as the N', which then make the N', which combines with a Det that isn't there to make an NP.
I hope that makes sense I barely understand it myself, which is glaringly obvious.

It's been a while since you posted and nobody's replied yet...maybe you should check out Coursework.Info, TSR's sister site. It has the largest library of essays in the UK.
They've got over 160,000+ essays, projects, assignments, coursework etc.. all written by GCSE, A Level and Uni students. You get access either by publishing some of your own work, or paying £4.99 for a month's access. Both ways give you unlimited access to all of the essays.
All their documents are submitted to Turnitin anti-plagiarism software, so it can't be misused, and the site’s used by hundreds of thousands of UK teachers and students.
Re: Could I have some word/phrase structure tree help plase?
You don't need to have a Det in a sentence, no. Like for plurals (as you suggested, 'angry men').
However in 'My favourite .....', my is a possessive adjective which counts as a determiner, therefore it would be a N' branching to Det (under this would be 'my) and N', then branching to AdjP (to A, then 'favourite) and N', to N (to whatever noun you are describing). Hope that makes sense, you've probably got help for this already but if you need any more help on trees, don't hesitate to ask. They are little terrors and I'm still grasping it myself but I've got a plethora of books to look things up in.
I highly recommend 'Syntax' by Maggie Tallerman by the way.

Oh thanks! I sort of solved it (ie pretended it didn't exist) by starting again with 'The happiest' instead of 'My favourite', but it's really useful to know, I just wrote off all 'My' sentences after that, so cheers
Thankyou very much especially for the bits in bold! I don't really know anyone in my class to ask, and most of them seem to know it already, so glad to know I'm not alone. I'll have a look for that book this weekend, just relying on the textbook atm.
I think I'm alright for help with any other bits too thanks (for now...), I got it all done eventually and it seemed to make sense, so any mistakes I've made will be down to understanding something wrong, and I couldn't possibly get you to check everything in my brain is right, but thanks again.

Oh I'm sure they're having as much trouble as you. I'm a second year linguistics student and most of the people on my module are finding it just as hard, especially since it's such a logical scientific concept and we're all arts students really!
But yeah, I'll be happy to help with anything I can so let me know. Are you studying this at uni?
