Re: The Running ThreadA friend did the Reading Half, has knocked a few teeth out and messed up his nose from falling.(Original post by Nichrome)
Ran the Reading Half marathon today, managed 1:44, extremely pleased with that! First longish distance run I've ever done, and only did a few training runs up to a max of 15k. Did most of my fitness gaining on the rowing machine
And some poor bloke died.
Well done.

Re: The Running Thread
Hi,
I've just started running again last month and I'm doing a 4mile run in 28 mins (give or take) about 3times a week. I was told by my gp to be careful as I have hyper-mobile joints so I was just wondering what would be a sensible way to increase endurance but also improve my sprint capacity too?
Thanks

Re: The Running ThreadUsually 11k. Longest I have run is 12k. Usually run in the gym but I found that I run faster on the road. So this week when I go home for easter I'm planning on doing a couple of road runs and see how I get on(Original post by magdaplaysbass)
I was going to do it last year but only found out about it after the deadline :/ i might do it this year
although i'm hoping the music will distract me from the intense exhaustion i'm gonna feel...
what distances do you usually run?
I know £46 pounds is a lot and was almost tempted to leave it and probably would have left it till next year if I had not made it my new years resolution to run a half marathon in 2012(Original post by OU Student)
I was looking into this one; but am not willing to pay £46 for one race. -
Re: The Running ThreadWhat happened to them?(Original post by OU Student)
A friend did the Reading Half, has knocked a few teeth out and messed up his nose from falling.
And some poor bloke died.

Condolence to the poor guy

Re: The Running ThreadHe basically collapsed on the finished line, and his heart seemed to give in, they couldn't resuscitate him. Story is here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-berkshire-17580252
Pretty scary, I saw a woman collapsed with an oxygen mask on her mouth on the way round at about mile 11

Re: The Running Thread
Does anyone having any thoughts on when to replace running shoes? I know the general rule of thumb is after 500 miles; I'm just wondering how high the risk of injury is if you go much beyond that. I think mine are at around the 650/700 mark but apart from being discoloured, they don't look worn out- certainly not in comparison to my last pair
Is it necessary to change them soon to be on the safe side, or would it be alright to just wait until there are visible signs of overuse?

Re: The Running ThreadI've just got back into it too(Original post by Will Lucky)
Started running again, doing around 3 miles everyday. I'm more out of shape than I thought as I'm having to stop a few times but I'm determined to get back into this and manage the full run without stopping and then starting to slowly expand it.
I did 2 miles the other day, which is good considering it was a very steep run! -
Re: The Running ThreadIf you're not used to running daily, don't run daily just yet! 3-4 times a week is a fine amount of training to do really, for the most part, and lets you put a days rest between work outs, which your body often needs!(Original post by WdA04)
Hey guys,
The other day I did a 2.7 mile run in 35 mins (not great I know) so I'm now thinking of doing 3 miles per night while im on holiday from uni.
Thanks
Make sure to stretch before and after each run
best of luck!

Re: The Running ThreadTry adidas micoach personally I find it much better than the nike+ app, it isn't as flashy though(Original post by Michael Locke)
I've just started running again after being a vegetable for about a year. Downloaded this iPhone app called Nike+ to keep track of it which seems pretty cool. I barely managed 1.7 miles, which I'm ashamed of.

Re: The Running ThreadAfter around 500miles the cushioning material starts to degrade, but it's also linked to what you run on so grass will be less harsh than tarmac, but then again the shoe won't be getting wet all the time. Check the soles are they excessively worn in areas, but generally once your knees start to shake more or you start getting pains after a run you know they've had it.(Original post by CantThinkOfaUsername)

Re: The Running ThreadWOOOOO :-)(Original post by Yellow-nutshell)
I ran 8.2 miles! This is the furthest I've run!
It makes me think that I might be able to actually finish the half marathon in June after all!
And some poor bloke died.
