How would I go about contacting local and national newspapers?
For example, email or post? and where would I get this information from?
I'm searching the internet with no success at the moment

Well this doesn't exactly tie in to what you asked for but:

Really good experience is running your own newspaper (in school). It looks great on your personal statement and while it isn't exactly the real deal it still helps develop useful skills and stuff

Email a polite covering letter and CV. Call up a week later if you don't hear anything. Don't pester, don't litter it with spelling mistakes, get your enthusiasm across - it's competitive. Good luck.

You should be challenged in this kind of career. Just be formal and have self-confidence to send your resume/CV and catch their attention via email. Check out the company's email address first.
