I have been debating which to buy. It seems from reviews I have read that the new MB's plastic gloss finish gets marked really easy, but they never actually show pictures, any experience of that happening?

Other than the MBP being aluminium the £100 price difference seems to be down to a keyboard backlight and SD card slot on the MBP which dont bother me too much. The MB has more storage and similar performance.

I am leaning towards the new MB because I want something brand new which my friends don't have, but if it gets badly scratched and marked I might regret it and cry.

Is the MBP worth the extra £100??

Yeah there isn't much of a difference besides the looks, the backlit keyboard and the SD card slot. However, if you have the money, I'd stretch to the MacBook Pro, perhaps one with a larger screen size. My friend has the old white MacBook made from the same plastic material and it really does get very dirty. Dust is very visible in the nooks and crannies of the keyboard and it's also more prone to scratches.

I'm debating the white Macbook vs. the Pro, too. With the equivalent Pro, you pay £100 more and lose out on 70GB of hard disk space. But I don't want to lose my remote

Also the Pro is shiny.

Do you plan on using your new MacBook or showing it off down your local Starbucks??

Anyways just to get a little scope, what exactly are your need for a laptop??
As in what will you be using it for..........its a lot of money for a laptop of that kind.

Sometimes it is nice to have something which is somewhat different - and not what every Tom, Dick and Harry has.

The macbook pro can get scratched too, and they can dent, which doesn't happen to the macbook. The macbooks do get a bit grimy after a couple of years though.

If I spend £800 on something it would just annoy me of it got easily marked even if it purely cosmetic.

The scope is a just need a mid range laptop. Maybe to run the odd game on and design program, but do not need amazing graphics or anything like that.

And I imagine I could get something for cheaper, but do not know much about laptops and its so much easier going onto the mac site where they have few choices than going on to a dell/hp/sony site which have loads of laptops and I dont have a clue what to look at.

Also I have heard only good things about macs such as reliabilty.

I've been tempted to get a new MBP (£772 with campus discount) but I think I'm going to wait. I expect there to be updated models around Jan.

I ordered my new macbook just under a week ago

The wait is horrible.

Came to £825 with 4gb ram, 3 years insurance and a case for it.

Which isn't too bad

Erm you don't have to imagine........you could get a laptop that suits your needs for a MUCH cheaper price than buying a MacBook

Why not create a new topic asking for laptop advice and specifying what your needs for it are?? Instead of spending a lot more money on a Mac

This ^ if you're on a budget or have no particular OS preference. Macs are brilliant but if cost is a major concern you can get a comparable machine (specs wise at least) for far less elsewhere

I wasn't saying you couldn't afford it or something similar to that. But wouldn't you rather do a bit of research and find a machine that still suits your need but for a better price than the MacBook (and there are lots available). Then you would save yourself some money that could be spent on other things

Can you not read?

The thread title is "New Macbook vs Older MBPro".

He didn't ask you to persuade him to buy a windows or other.

He asked if it was worth the £100 more.

I was going to buy the Pro, then they bought the new Macbook out.

And i changed my mind and bought the macbook.

Thats my opinion.

Unless you desperately want a backlit keyboard and SD card slot just buy the macbook.

Get a slip case for it as well and you shouldn't have any problems

The Pro does have a superior body structure though, it's not just the SD card slot or backlight keyboard

But anyways OP I have heard that the new MacBook comes with both improved screen quality along with a prolonged battery life. Not to mention the performance improvement that is expected of all newer models. One word of warning, the new model has lost Firewire connectivity which you may want to take into account.........
