Now, I realise that his obvious genius (which I completely missed) has already resulted in him "winning" a nobel prize but does anybody else think he is an overated, disapppointing, waste of space? Or is it just me?
It's only been a year. He shouldn't have got the Nobel Prize but the full on assult on him in the US media over the past 6 months hasn't really given him much room to progress with his policies. The US is now pretty much out of recession. I'm gonna give him until the mid-terms. Oh, and I don't really think the President of the United States can be called a waste of space :p.
I was initially quite excited about him, but it's fizzled away now.
I think he was wholly undeserving of a nobel bloody peace prize ... which he seems to have won purely because he isn't Bush. He then says he's skipping the Copenhagen summit (!?) and instead announces that he's using his Nobel prize speech to suggest ways in which he hopes to bring peace and stop climate change ... which I think proves that he hasn't earned it yet.
yeah he sucks ass. especially with the fact he continues to butcher the poorest people in the world in Afghanistan and groveling to Israel on every issue.
He's a salesman, a marketer, a smooth talker. I always thought that after the three word phrases, viral internet campaigns, famous acquaintances, and wishy washy speeches he would get found out. He did a lot more in his first six months than I thought he would do, but as I expected it has all fizzled out into nothing. Presidents don't make significant changes nowadays because they lack the power and authority to make such changes. He also wants to remain popular and keep his modern celebrity-esque image in tact which is severely holding him back from making any real changes with regards to issues such as green taxes and middle east interference. Saying that, he's still attempted to make serious reform in areas such as healthcare but has been unsuccessful. Once he shows he can actually deliver rather than just spew popular opinion I'll feel more confident in him.
If people here did their math (rarely) they'd realize that obama was a centralist and not the liberal he advertised, hell, he's not even a democrat to be honest: foreign policy, environmental policy (clean coal? LMFAO) his no solution to healthcare (well, I'll let this one pass since he actually got congress to work bipartisan), prop 8 wasn't discarded, DONT ASK DONT TELL IS STILL ACTIVE!
I mean, I got a list of **** he hasn't really reformed, but I you've got to realize that congress has a slew of influential lobby peddling and due to the enormous corporate influence, it would be hard, even with a filibuster proof majority (which democrats don't even have), to pass something that's overshadowing his other anticipated, ambitious legislations without having the right-wing machine (which also include blue-dogs—moderate democrats, and one independent) on full throttle.
Obama is pushing through boundaries in american history and this impeding congress is not only expected, it's taken for granted. Obama is really attacking the heart of the right which has been in power since the early 80's (20+.)
Most people don't realize that Obama is carrying a lot of Bush's policies on a lot of different political spectrum's— most starkly displayed in his anticipated war in Afghanistan. In all, obama is facing a hell of a lot of issues that would have daunted Jack Kenn. A mother of quagmires. Point being, if Obama's healthcare reform bill ends up being semi-medicare, and semi-industrial, it's not going to look good. If a public option, however, appears for 95% of the middle-class-- and not 10%-- then he's going to be exalted by his voters, and that would offset the success of other massive reforms— like the patriot act.
What sucks is that people didn't vote like 'RATIONAL' people should have--Ralph Nader. I'll continue to vote for Nader as long as he and me live.

I think he has a few serious character flaws that prevent him from being a great president. He has a huge ego, he wants to be loved by everyone, and he can't cope with any kind criticism.

Hell no. There are millions along with you (me too)!
Believe it or not some people suits them to have an overrated, disappointing, waste of space, as a representation of there in existent grip on the affairs and matters around them.

No, you are not alone, he's possibly the most overrated human being since the Beatles.
So you're valuing Obama's leadership skills on account of how big his ego is?
He should have a huge ego for what he's accomplished so far; you can make a sarcastic sneer that he hasn't done anything, but that's just an outright ridiculous talking point. If you want to talk about useless people who haven't accomplished anything in the direction of human progression but have huge egos, then you're better off talking about lady gaga and kanye west.
I didn't even vote for obama since I never liked his true voting stance in the political realm.
There's quite a good article in the Economist on this - I can't link because it's still on subscription only until next week.
Essentially, by his owned hyped up standards, Obama has been a failure. However, by the standards of any other president he's actually been quite successful. The economy is recovering, many foreign powers are warming to him, he's making progress on climate change, he's started a shift out of Iraq and he's brought healthcare to the table for debate.
I'm torn between whether he's all talk and no action or he's just waiting to get this Health Care Bill passed before he really starts to kick ass. He's such an amazing speaker though - probably the greatest political orator we'll see in our lives - and it's perhaps this that's got him into office.
