not sure if they call them 'briefs' at IB.. 8 weeks till my deadline and I have 0 finished compositions and no briefs.

one time when not having briefs is a bad thing.

It's a little bit like an abstract for an essay - you want to outline the primary ideas / themes / frameworks surrounding your compositions, what or who were your influences, and how you think you realised your focal points technically.

Although, fairly sure you should get cracking on those compositions before you start thinking about the briefs.
