Hi Everyone - Just updated my pc from the student steal deal from microsoft - Vista 32bit to Win 7 32bit - and all my stuff is gone !!! its like a clean install had just happened !!! When i chose a upgrade any help please !!! But the ammount of space taken up on my laptop is still about the same so the files must be somewhere i just dunno where and how to access them

Please anyone know what to do >? Any help please?

Go to computer, local disk c and there should be a folder called windows.old.

All your stuff should be in there

There is no folder called that in the local disk I found a folder called Windows Q - with my user and folder - but all the folders are empty !!!

This is why you back up regardless whether it's an upgrade/clean install.

It's look like your Windows 7 upgrade overwrite your old files. You should make backup before, just because is a *********

if your a mac-troll trying to make out win7 has a similar prob to snow leopard had on release, epic fail.

if you're not, should of backed up!

do a search for a file you're definitely sure was on there before upgrade and see if it finds it - then follow that file back, see if it leads you to the rest.

upgrading doesn't change anything really tbh - files etc in same place, same logins, only moves programs into a windows.old.

you must have either been very unlucky and it bugged or did it wrong - did you tell it to get all the updates before upgrading?

what folders do you have in C:\ ?

do you have C:\Users?
if so, what folders are in there

If the amount of disk space is pretty much the same - their is a good chance it is still somewhere on your hard drive - or partitioned.

Guys not a mac troll seriously - not sad -

When i installed i did say check for updates and only found 1 and then i did also click upgrade

when i go C:\Users - there is only my new win 7 user which is fresh

however when i go C:\$WINDOWS.~Q\DATA\Users\Myname - all my previous vista folders are there but no content =(

i know i should of backed up - just totally skipped my mind most of my work is on my usb and music and stuff on my iphone - but pictures and my bookmarks and films

files with a $NAME.~ are temp files used by the installer which should be deleted automatically once it's been installed succesfully.

Sometimes it doesn't and it looks like the upgrade "failed" just at the point it creates the windows.old - which is a bit of bad news, as it means they're all lost.

if you right click that 'C:\$WINDOWS.~Q' and view properties, it's size should be that of what you're searching for.

if so, just delete to get space back - can't help with the files etc that were supposed to be backed up

Nada CHecked - I also checked the space these folders were taking up......OMG Guys found it HAHAH Woooo Was in a folder called $INPLACE.~TR manderton done what you said done a detailed search and voila

You must have caused an error during the upgrade as the Win 7 upgrade installer moved the files from inplace to the user profile, so something happened during the upgrade.
