Are "covers" ever better than originals?
I have liked Lost Prophets but their version of "cry me a river" just doesn't work.
It's got to improve the original, just repeating their trademark riffs & sounds is cheap. -
Re: Are "covers" ever better than originals?Ellie Goulding's version of Black and Gold is better than the Sam Sparro original...(Original post by + polarity -)
Sometimes.
For example, I quite liked Sam Sparro's Live Lounge cover of American Boy; it sounded nice, even though he changed some of the lyrics...

But Soft Cell's version is better than the original and Marilyn Manson's...(Original post by GoblinSoul)
Most of Manson's covers are better than the originals; Sweet Dreams, Personal Jesus, Tainted Love...
Also, Wax and Wayne - Deftones.
It's mostly a matter of taste, and which version you heard first. -
Re: Are "covers" ever better than originals?I think Hendrix's all along the watchtower is a Dylan cover - never heard the original, but yeah, it's hard to imagine the cover being worse than the original(Original post by corney91)
All covers of Bob Dylan's songs that I've heard (I've not heard many though to be honest) are better than the original in my opinion - great songwriter but I don't like his voice

Original Hallelujah: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttv5dyvtF4o
Jeff Buckleys cover: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AratTMGrHaQ
Bon Jovi's cover: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMRPfCRV2xI
For me the 2 covers are far superior, however, it depends on the song and the listeners preference.
, but I quite like its upbeat-ness.
