I don't think you're ugly at all. I prefer the before photo, but that's just my opinion.
As for the hair/beard - a bit of stubble is always nice, as are sideburns. Maybe grow your hair a bit longer and mess it up with some matt wax.
I'm sure whatever you do will be nice though.
