Emma Thompson talks to Exeter Uni to try and reduce racism after her rwandan born adopted son experience racist taunts while studying there. She told them that the BNP would love it in exeter because there are so few black faces. whats your opinion of this exeter students? do you think exeter is more racist than some other universities? Would be interesting to hear your thoughts.

Well, Devon was a prominent fascist centre in the early part of the 20th century - also, having lived there for a decade I know that the racial diversity is very low. She's probably right .

Yes Exeter has a majority of white students. So does all the South West. It's not because it's full of racists!

The only examples of racism at Exeter are when some 'nerds' bullied her son, and also some bouncers who were rude to him. Why does this mean the uni now has to have patronising talks on how to be more 'inclusive'? There may not be many black students here but there are still a fair few, and a significant number of international students.

I don't know anyone who has experience racism or prejudice of any kind, these news stories about her son are the first I've heard.

She just wants something to campaign about.

I'm sorry but that's a bit naïve of her. Yes, the "diversity" is low in terms of ethnicity, but it's not due to any prejudice that needs to be "driven out". I think she's getting the wrong end of a stick with three ends.

Oh FFS so the south west is predominantly white, big deal get over it. It doesn't work like that, you don't and shouldn't actively seek to take on ethnic minorities through positive discrimination, simply because of comments like this.

I'll let you know when I experience some sort of racism or prejudice especially considering that technically I live in the "worst" part of the south west, well the worst part according to her views.

I didn't see a person of a different race until i was about 6 and still that was in my mums photographs. The south west is not very diverse when it comes to race but that does not make everybody that lives here a sodding racist .

my thoughts:
emma thompson needs to educate her son as much as possible in english ways. I got teased at medical school because i didnt know who delia smith and various other stalwarts of the english cultural scene were- so they thought i was probably really dumb or geeky or something- no- I just hadnt watched english telly or listened to english radio all my childhood

I don't get what she's said that's particularly controversial. It all seems rather reasonable to me.
