I need some advice before I start to actually install windows 7, having purchased, downloaded and burnt it to a disc.
The problem is about my hard disk.
I currently have a C: Drive which is 1.24GB and a D: Drive which is 144GB. I have windows xp installed on the D: Drive and the C:/ Drive is blank. I want to install windows 7 on the C: Drive, so how would I combine the C: Drive and D: drive and install windows 7 on top of it. However I also want seperate partitions to hold music and videos etc. Below is how I want the partitions to be set out:
C: - Main hard drive with windows 7 installed - About 50GB
D: - Music - 30GB
E: - Videos - 30GB
F: - Photos - 10GB
G: - Downloads - 20GB
How would I go about doing this with my current configuration?
Could I just partition before I install windows 7 and make those drives, transfer all music and videos to their respective drives and just install windows 7 on the C: Drive with my music and videos remaining intact?
Really need help doing this. I've got windows 7 burnt on dvd so I can start straight away.
I've also got and iPod Touch and have bought lots of applications. How would I transfer these to windows 7? Or would I have to buy them again
Get something called PQMagic or similar. One of the functions that they do is merge 2 drives together. Then back up ur files from C:\ and D:\, then format that with ur windows 7 CD, and install Windows 7.

why on earth would you want all this on seperate partitions, It just doen't make any logical sense. You HD is so puny in size that you are simply wasting your time. You need 1 partition and a few folders ...... end of.
Firstly are you talking about C drive and D drive as 2 separate partitions on one hard drive?
And are you going have just windows 7 or having a dual boot?
If you're only having windows 7
To combine them back to 1 original partition you just need to delete them both when you are prompt to install the OS. (when you insert the setup disk)
You then can allocate whatever you like, so just create 1x50GB partition for the OS, or you could create all 5 (you can create the additional partition later on, through disk management)
In a month or two your system will begin to slow down as Vista and Xp did before it and it not a huge improvement (it better but not so much better). If your going to get a new OS get Ubuntu. It's easy learn and you won't have the so many compatibility issues everyone always brags about and you be amaze by the tons and tons of available free applications available.

I have many partition as well like what this guy is trying to do. However mine isn't partitioned for download/musics etc but for Dual boots and stuff.
A reason why people have a partition for their windows file and data on separate partition is so it doesn't slow down the computer overtime.
Because you can use a program which keep that particular partition intact so anything which is installed/created after will be restored to the original form on boot up.

I also use partions for dual boot purposes on 2 older machines, on all newer machines I simply have a disk for each OS.
The idea of slowing a computer down by not using partitions is long past its sell by date. It is simply no longer true, simple as that.
The guys's hard disk is so small that it would be a waste of time even in partitioning was still worthwhile in a windows os, which it isn;t...
Needless to say I do fully understand both the worth and advantages of partition for my linux systems/ and server....

Which version of Windows 7 are you using? I suggest that you take Windows XP and run it through Windows 7.

So bascially after I insert the disc and start the setup, I delete the C Drive and D Drive and there will be unallocated space, and create a new partition and install the OS on that??? (so many "and's" ) Could I also partition the space from the installer so I have the separate partitions that I want?

So You want me to throw away an OS which I've paid a considerable amount for and get linux/ubuntu?? No sense at all
I've tried ubuntu before and after a few days, I just didn't like the interface and the length of time that I wasted to get things working.
Also I reinstall XP every 6 months, because it DOES get slow, but the last time I screwed the installation by creating a new drive which was much greater than my original drive.

Well everyone to there own but the trouble you have in Linux is with operation (thus able to improve yourself); while the trouble you have in Windows is software sided thus unable to get improved much.
