Plus i've heard girls just take the drink and then leave as soon as you buy it.

Make eye-contact, or if you're standing next to each other whilst waiting for drinks, start a conversation.
Straight away, she'll either be interested or not, and you'll have to accept it if its a case of the latter.

Just don't do horrible things that I've seen guys do in the past:
Slyly try and dance with you by coming up behind you
Repeatedly try and dance with a girl when its obvious she doesn't want to
Repeatedly touching her on the shoulder
Pulling her hair (seen some stuff bordering on assault with this one)

you see in clubs loads of times that girls get drinks of guys then either leave, or talk to him or 5-10 minutes then leave. Either way, buying her a drink isn't going to make her want to do anything with him. I don't see why the **** he should have to pay for her to talk to him anyway, its demeaning.

Additionally, buying £3 drinks or whatever several times a night adds up, especially when there is no real benefit to doing so.

I've always found the latter to be highly successful, and received a number of compliments for my subtle pulling style.

Full body painting may be a little OTT, I will concede that.
