A friend of mine wants to do a foundation year in engineering. What are his chances of getting into Southampton University for it?
Is it really competitive?
He already has 3 grade B's which is the minimum required.
I thought foundation year was for ppl who did not have the proper a-level qualifications, not for people without the right grades with a-levels. Anyway it is best to contact them directly.

That too, but on their website they say that they accept A levels from people who got lower than their expected grades.
Southampton is a great university, but there are much better engineering universities out there and maybe he should also have a look at those?
(Brunel, UCL, Bristol, L'bourough, etc)
Marine Engineering (stuff) at Southampton is top class, but it really does depend on what field he wants to get into. I am a Marine/Electrical Engineer, studying at Warsash Maritime Academy, which is very loosely affiliated with Solent (boo!), but on the plus side I am sponsored and don't pay tuition fees and don't need mega A levels to get in. Bonus!

Hi, I don't think his grades are good enough for those universities you mentioned. He wants to do electrical engineering, he'll have to look into it I guess... Thanks for your post.

Ah electrical engineering gives you lots of options because there are lots of universities which are good at this as it does not require the massive amounts of workshop machinery and tools that Mech. Engineering does.
I'm sorry, but what is this nonsense about Southampton not being as strong as places such as Bristol and L'boro? Engineering is one of Soton's strongest departments - it is consistently considered one of the best in the country for the course!

There was no need for the neg rep. I said So'ton was a good university, but Brunel and Imperial are better for Mechanical Engineering which you cannot really argue with as they are consistantly above So'ton in the league tables for it!
But it depends on what engineering you want to do, which I said. I am a Marine/Mechanical Engineer. It would seem stupid to do it anywhere else except Warsash (Solent) as it is the best place in the country.
Different unis have different strengths, that is not to say Southampton is rubbish or bad, just for Mech. Eng, it is not as good as Brunel. It is still a very good university.

Imperial you might be able to get away with that statement for, Bristol too if you ignore the fact that their engineering depts are tiny in comparison to Soton (that have ~40 mech eng staff compared to almost 150 at Soton)....but Brunel???

So as I say, no need for the hate.
If you spout unsubstantiated ******** about a uni in it's own forum then you will attract neg rep

When I originally posted, it was in engineering, not in southampton unis.
But fair point with the league tables, my bad. I always thought Brunel was better than that!

Well, I think there is a certain basis for arguing against league tables (which PQ has picked up on! ), but I'll admit that engineering isn't my field of 'expertise', so I won't pick any further.
Although I have to say, I did not neg rep you. You'd know if I did, as I always leave my name!

Don't worry - you're unlucky to have the thread moved to the Southampton forum, where its students will defend it like a lion defends its cubs
Lol, true, and fair play.
I go to Warsash Maritime Academy as I am training to become a Marine Engineer with P&O Cruises. Unfortunately, Warsash is affliated with the other Southampton 'university', it was somewhat of a shock to come from Keele University (where I studied Geog) to Solent where they study Media Studies and Football Management. I mean honestly.
I think Warsash props up Solent, it is ridiculous. *grumble* As you can tell, I have no allegiance whatsoever for Solent, it is a ********.

That's unlucky - but at least it's only an affiliation! I'm sure you can omit that on your CV anyway

True. And yeh I sure will be! Thankfully, Warsash is the best place in the country, just why oh why did they decide Solent over Southampton. The mind is boggled.
