Re: Is University Name/Ranking important?I think it is unfair to say that employers who care about which Uni people go to are snobbish, there is a very good reason that people try hard to get good grades to go to good unis, if no employer cared which uni you went to, then I'm pretty sure top unis wouldn't be as competitive as they are. So yes, ranking is important, to more or less extent depending on the job in question, but certainly saying that only snobbish employers care about the uni that potential employees went to is incorrect.(Original post by Leo*)
It'll only matter if the employer went to a high ranking university themselves and developed their own uni snobbery.
Otherwise, no it shouldn't really matter too much, although don't expect to be "head hunted" by employers scooping up graduates from "top universities" -
Which universities have better career prospects abroad:Imperial or UCL?
I'm planning to go into the Finance/Investment Banking field after i graduate. I am planning to apply for Theoretical Physics (slightly different course name at Imperial) and i was wondering in terms of international reputation for employers, which university is better?

Guardian League Table
Who else here thinks that the Guardian is pretty out with its rankings? For example for Biosciences (just picked at random- I'm doing physics) Gloucestershire is ranked at 11th, yet Imperial is ranked at 20th?! And Nottingham Trent is ranked 38th but Southampton is 45th?! For maths Central Lancashire is 5th- higher than places like Imperial, Bristol, UCL, Bath and Durham?! What is up with their league tables, because as far as I can see, they are pretty much useless!

Re: Is University Name/Ranking important?I suppose that in most cases, a difference between 10th and 90th would certainly be noticed by employers - after all, whilst it is true that employers do look at other factors rather than just where you obtained your degree, it is a huge difference.(Original post by TheMan100)
Hi, I was wondering whether a University's ranking/name/reputation is important in the world of work? Say for example, University A is ranked 10 out of 113, and University B, is ranked 90 out of 113, but you can get the exact same degree from both places.
Now, you have your degree, and apply for a job. Would the employer be bothered by the University you went to, despite you having a degree which is relevant to the job?
I'd say a difference between 15th and 8th wouldn't set you back at all, but for such a huge difference (80 places...), employers would notice. -
Re: Guardian League TableIt's rankings aren't "out" at all - they are based on the same information as other league tables, but given different weightings, as well as the value added score. So the rankings aren't just incorrect because they go against your perceptions of where universities should rank, the criteria used are a little different to other tables, as are the weightings, and consequently produce different results.(Original post by NuclearFusion)

you say it is useless, but why would you say the guardian's is useless but not the Times' or the Independent's? -
Re: Guardian League Table
All University rankings are arbitary. You can't catergorically say X uni is better than Y uni because it's ranked higher on some dumb ass league table. League table use a few static stats to work out a position. There is so much more to universities that the league tables don't even consider. At the end of the day university ranking is down to ones own perception of it - there is no right or wrong answer. If someone thinks that Trent is better than Southampton for Maths then so be it - as long as they can provide some valid justification be that employment rate, student satisfaction score or whatever.

Ok, but would you really choose to go to Northumbria or Central Lancashire for a maths degree over Imperial, Durham or Bristol? I think the answer to that is no... -
Rank of these five universities?
I have offers from these 5 institutions. I just wondered how they would rank in terms of overall prestige (league tables etc). I'm not a snob, but i do think that if it ranks well in league tables, it may aid my employment afterwards.
Leicester
Queen Mary
Royal Holloway
Sheffield
Sussex
Thanks in advance

I would rank the following as such :
1)Sussex
2)Leicester
3)Sheffield
4)Royal Holloway
5)Queen Mary
Sussex in particular gets their graduates into the top companies. Queen Mary is only good for architecture. -
