It's also kinda normal in the very modern secular super-duper 'acceptable Muslim' nation of Turkey. Though I've only read/heard about such cases in more rural areas, I think. Conversely, my cousins parents were cousins themselves, and she was born in Germany and her parents weren't fresh off boat (or train) either.

It survives even a generation unfortunately.
