    Hi,

Is there any way of getting an implant/IUD without GP referral/doing it at your GP? I'm currently away from uni where my GP is and having just forgotten to take the pill, had a sudden realisation that I'd rather not risk it any more. Plus, I have a long term boyfriend who has openly admitted to me he doesn't care when I'm on my period, so it's not a big deal controlling that with running packs together etc.

I have a couple of local (though living in a rural area, they're not that local) GUM clinics, but they mainly focus on STI testing and Emergency Contraception, so I'm not sure what I can do. I know last time I was down and I needed to go to the GP, I filled out a temporary residence form, but I'd rather not go through all the faff of that again.

    Thanks!
Find your local family planning clinic, they will be able to do it for you.

Re: The Contraceptive Thread - information and questions
Is it normal for the pill to make my period (well, withdrawal bleed now) worse than it used to be?
It used to be really light with no pain and now I'm on my first withdrawal bleed and oh my the cramps... I feel like I've been kicked in the stomach repeatedly, if I move to much or drink anything cold it feels like I'm getting stabbed It doesn't seem any heavier than usual though, which I guess is good.
But the pain is horrible - is this a normal side effect from the pill? I heard that for most people it makes any cramps better, but I didn't even get them before and now I am It doesn't say anything about it in the leaflet which I guess is why I'm worrying about it
Should I maybe ask to change pill?

How long have you been taking the pill for - is this your first withdrawal bleed? If you've been taking this pill for less than 6 months then I would persevere for that long to see if it settles down. I wouldn't ask to change just now. The pill is supposed to make your bleeding lighter and less painful...give it a chance to do so, this may just be your body adjusting.

Yes it's only my first withdrawal bleed so I guess I'll give more for my body time to adjust... I'm just in a lot of pain Thanks

I can tell that you've never experienced period pain before. Its really not that bad. Here's how you deal with it. Ibuprofen - take some. You can get packets of it for less than a quid from Boots. And a hot water bottle - put it on your stomach.

Problem solved. By the way, why are you posting anonymously now when you didn't bother in your last post? Not that this topic really calls for anonymity. Many girls get period pain, it's a common fact of life.

I can tell that you've either never experienced bad period pain, or that you are ignorant to the fact that people have different pain thresholds.

You know I really don't know why you post in this thread... are you trying to help people or piss people off? You are more often rude and condescending than helpful... for the most part, you come across a bitch. Its a thread for asking questions. Treating people like they are stupid for asking them is not at all helpful.

I can tell that you don't know anything about me at all, and that you're ignorant to the fact that things on the Internet can be taken the wrong way if you choose to read them under a certain tone. Maybe I'm just more to the point than pussy footing around? A lot of people ask questions about the same issues on here, over and over again, at least I made the effort to answer, whereas you haven't in this case, you're just sticking your oar in for the sake of it aren't you?

OP was complaining of pain, I suggested some remedies. And for the record, I have had bad period pain before. I honestly don't see what your problem is.

No, I don't know you, nor do I pretend to, but how else are people supposed to read you calling people dumb, and other words to that effect for asking valid questions. Yes, maybe they good google it, maybe the answers are already in the thread... but maybe people don't want to trawl through 240 pages to find it... and maybe people are looking for experiences similar to theirs as well as answers. there is no need to be rude to people. If you can't answer a question politely, if you don't like people asking questions that you've previously answered, then don't reply... let someone else do it!!

I'm just fed up of your attitude... and so are three other people by the looks of it... perhaps people don't say so because you come across so aggressive.

Must have accidentally clicked the post anonymously box, oops
I have had pain in the past, just not this bad, usually I'd just go for a jog and it would relieve it. This time I took both ibuprofen and paracetamol, it didn't help at all. I was still in lots of pain and it was almost impossible to walk never mind go for my jog Tried the hot water bottle thing it didn't help that much either
Luckily I don't feel so bad today!

This is the Internet. I'm just as entitled to say what I like as you are.
If you don't like what I have to say, don't read my posts. Then you can't get "fed up" of my attitude. I haven't done anything to you at all so don't be such a busybody on my contribution to the forum.

    Thanks.

Wholeheartedly agree. This is a thread about contraception on a student forum. By nature, you're going to have a lot of young people who are trying different types of contraception for the first time, for some people the Pill is the first medication they've ever been prescribed. Some people are going to have "stupid" questions they feel they can't ask someone they know.

If the first thing they see when they look on this thread is this type of rudeness:

I can tell that you've never experienced period pain before.

Not sure if you've missed this vital point... I'm not even sure why you're asking this question, seems kinda dumb...

You sound like a bit of a twit yourself tbh.

If it says first day of your period, that means first day, no?

If you have an Aunt who is a doctor then wtf were you doing asking a bunch of students for medical advice anyway?

Ok ok, didn't ask for your life story dear

assuming that you still haven't taken 3 seconds to engage common sense and think about this
They sure as hell aren't going to ask their question, for fear of being ripped to shreds for asking it. And that's just going back a few pages. Yes, there were some very helpful replies, sophisticated, but they are far outweighed by petty insults and condescending comments which were completely unnecessary. By having a stinking attitude like that I'm fairly sure you are putting off or upsetting far more posters than you are actually helping. If you can't say anything nice... well then try a bit harder.

Looking for people who have had the copper coil fitted!

I had one fitted today, and obviously was expecting cramps and some pain for a few days...I was just wondering if it's normal to feel cramping more to one side? If that makes sense. I feel like it's just my right hand side that seems to be achy rather than a generalised cramp. I think I'm just worried I've got some kind of perforation after reading horror stories :P

How long until the pain stops? It's calmed down a lot, and is just like normal period pains, but I was hoping it would be pretty much gone by the time I'm back in work at the weekend.

    Any experiences would be helpful!

Most girls/ladies tend to experience pain for a few days, which gradually subsides, and this is completely normal and expected - after all, a foreign body has just been placed in your uterus. As I'm sure your doctor has told you, you can also take paracetamol when necessary (maximum every 4 to 6 hours) - that'll help.

    Hope that helped!

Yes thank you! Was just concerned about the pain seeming to be on one side, but know it will be a few days to settle.

From what you said (and as far as one can tell in a forum, for whatever online advice is worth...), it doesn't sound like uterine perforation. There are always horror stories to be found online - put it this way, the 999 women out of 1000 who had no complications won't all be telling their story online, but the 1 in 1000 probably will - and it'll sound downright horrible because only the most extreme situations make it to the interwebs.

You speak sense haha. I think I've had such bad luck with every other contraceptive that I'm just expecting this to go wrong too! Fingers crossed though it all goes to plan. I'd love to be side-effect (and child) free for 10 years!

Thanks for the advice (and calming down )

Hey, I'm taking Dianette (primarily for acne), and I'm looking to use it as a contraceptive now too. The thing is, I'm also taking tetracycline antibiotics, and I know SOME antibiotics can interfere with the pill.

I THINK I remember my doctor saying that tetracycline doesn't interfere, but I just thought I'd double check on here and see if anybody else knew for sure?

Go back and ask your doctor or call NHS direct.
