    BA Economics - Manchester
The course doesn't look too bad, but how soft does Economics & Social Studies sound ;\ Why did they do it -_-

Anyway, does this course cover economics is depth without going in to 'social studies' modules?

I think the actual name of the qualification is Economics & Social Studies, although they don't show that on the website, the prospectus and module PDF files all have that name on it. Also, if you search it on here it has been mentioned by people on the course..

I read somewhere on here on a thread I found through the search function that the name of your degree at the end is:

BA Economics and Social Studies, Specialism [insert subject]

I've got an offer for International Business, Finance and Economics might try and change to BA Economics but the name seriously is

No other offers as i only applied about 3 days ago...but have applied to:
    Warwick
    Nottingham
    Birmingham
    Manchester
    Loughborough (back up)

My first-choice is Manchester though because I am in love with the city now...I really didn't want any london unis either (too close to home)

How come you didn't apply for BSc Economics at Manchester, wanted more options?

    I've applied to:
    Aston - Offer
Manchester (International business, finance and economics) - offer
    Nottingham (Industrial Economics) - offer
    Leicester - Pending

I don't know what my first choice is, either Nottingham or Aston. Aston 'cause I will save ALOT of money as it's closer and I can move back home after the first year. Plus it has a placement year. The Uni seemed really down to earth aswell... I guess I have to visit them. I might even firm Manchester 'cause of the course. meh

Yeah, BA seems to be a lot more flexible in terms of the modules and stuff. Bsc is a lot more mathematically-orientated too, which I would struggle with. I checked out Nottingham, the uni is good but I hated the area, it has one of the worst crime rates too apparently...

Yeah that's exactly what is putting me off Nottingham. You hear of students getting their flats broken into etc etc. It's really a shame, the University has a really good rep in terms of economics and in general.

hello- to all of those looking at BA ECON- im currently on my first year on the course.....

    BA economics + "social studies"

social studies basically means in the first year you have to choose a range of subjects, between politics sociology history finance business
    also :
maths- depending if you have studied it before either higher, intermediate or foundation.
    statistics- "" ""
    &
economics- if you did a level economics then you are put onto a harder units.

then in the second year you can choose to specialize in a subject changing your degree into "BA ECON + (finance) etc or you can choose to keep the degree open as BA + socia.......

however the units you choose throughout your study will limit what you can do in the following years, for example if you don't take finance units in year one- you wont be able to take finance in year 2 etc...

ALSO MATHS- is very hard whichever year you are on, if you decide to drop maths after the first year you will struggle MASSIVELY in years 2 and 3 as maths is used alot in economics... therefore if you drop it to take "easier modules" you will be unable to take some economic units.

remember the acid test is when jobs ask for the breakdown of your degree (which they do) if they see "economics rubbish easy module rubbish easy module" you wont be desirable

    hope this helps

I'm really sorry to bump an old thread, but I would just like some clarity as I think lots of people arent sure about the degree title.
So say you carried on to specialise in Politics

    the degree would be called
    BA(Econ) Economics and Politics

    not
BA(Econ) Economics and Social Studies specialising in Politics
    so confused

Iv posted in the other thread about this as well.

What i would say is im from Nottingham and dont believe all the crap about the crime. If you get an offer form Nottm Uni take it. The university grounds are the best iv seen (so tranquil) and where the accomadation is based really isnt too bad. Beeston is a decent area. (alot more reputable than most of the areas where Nottm Trents accomadation is) Just do your research when getting your 2nd and 3rd year housing. Personally id try to stick to Beeston or further a drift at Attenborough but id try and steer away from Chilwell.

As I know it the 'econ' stands for economic and social studies so:

BA(Economic and Social Studies) Politics or whatever
