Re: The Dubstep Society
Just
Try Modestep? I'm not a massive fan of them myself anymore but if those are the kind of acts you like, they'll probably appeal.(Original post by PatrickD)
Skream, Benga, Chase & Status, Nero, Skrillex, Joker, Flux Pavilion.
As you can see, all pretty standard, well-known dubstep artists. There's nothing wrong with mainstream dubstep but I'm looking for some buried gold from the experts here.
He's pretty much everywhere now, I've heard him getting played during daytime shows on Radio 1 and other "mainstream" stations (Christ I hate that word). I must admit I like his music a lot, enough to buy a ticket to see him next month and not turn away a second one for free. I just don't personally consider his music dubstep and won't listen to him in the same playlists that I'd put the likes of Burial and Joker.(Original post by littleshambles)
I've managed to avoid hearing Skrillex if I can help it. I didn't even realise he was so popular. But it's the same with most music these days as I don't have music TV or listen to the radio etc
On another note, I've rediscovered a producer called Fracx amongst one of my older playlists of more chilled out tracks. Definitely worth checking out his Soundcloud if this kind of track appeals to you. Plus he's a nice guy, he's gone out of his way to create FLAC versions of a few of his remixes for me (:

Re: The Dubstep SocietyAh, yeah I've listened to quite a bit of Modestep and you're right, I did enjoy it.(Original post by Gofre)

Yeah, Skrillex gets played loads on Radio 1 at the moment which I suppose is causing a lot of people like me to look a bit more into dubstep (or at least what we think is dubstep). I can see how he perhaps isn't really a dubstep artist but, for me, he is a stepping stone to make some of the less well-known artists more accessible. -
Re: The Dubstep SocietyYeah he's a good thing for the genre in that regard, it's a bit of a double edged sword. I've lost count of the amount of times I've been listening to tracks on youtube and seen dozens of people criticising the song for not having a "sick/dirty/heavy drop" as if it's a necessity for it to be decent. There's plenty of mainstream stuff that I like a lot, but generating this misconception of what the genre should sound like irks me.(Original post by PatrickD)

Re: The Dubstep SocietyGood point. Luckily I'd heard a bit of dubstep before Skrillex started becoming a supposed figurehead for the genre so I realised it wasn't all like that. I love a "sick/dirty/heavy drop" but some of the more relaxed(?) stuff that has been recommended here, I've really enjoyed.(Original post by Gofre)

As I was listening to a lot of the recommendations on Youtube I noticed a lot of the comments and they really pissed me off. On every single video, they featured a flaming war over Skrillex with some rejecting him completely, others saying they liked him and hated anything that didn't sound like him (a result of the misconceptions you mentioned), and other people saying the like both and trying to keep the peace.
I don't think those who have only listened to Skrillex should say that other, older dubstep tracks are bad, but equally it's annoying when people shoot you down for liking his music. I can see why one might object to him being seen as a dubstep artist though, I guess. -
Re: The Dubstep SocietyOn the subject of the Midlands, any idea on any decent dubstep nights in or around Birmingham? I've got one of my uni mates coming down to stop in February and I'm keen to take advantage of having a friend who actually enjoys dubstep =P(Original post by JCC-MGS)
Lol I am always here to look out my dubstep brethren and sistren, especially the Midlands goons
-
Re: The Dubstep SocietyThere's usually bare in Digbeth if you look. 10th Feb at the HMV Institute is the Hype! 1st birthday bash so if your mate is just casually into dubstep there's Flux P there but there's also gonna be Shy FX. Other than that it's difficult to say cause there's loads of stuff always going on but just look out for flyers really, especially in and around Digbeth(Original post by Gofre)
