I live in Clarence Dock now so hit me up if you've got any questions. =]

Hi I was wondering if you could give me a better idea about the Clarence dock, I was really thinking of applying there but after all I'm reading everyone seems to make it to be a very quiet-non sociable out of the way place to be? Is that the case?

It's all down to what you're after really, but I thought Liberty Dock (Clarence got a new name) was alright really.

The only real downside to it is the distance from the university. There were 3-5 buses an hour to uni on a weekday but if you wanted to walk it could take 30, 35 mins if you're fast, 45 mins if you're like me ha. Silver lining is you can pass though the city on the way to/from, which is useful and you can check out what's going on in the centre/on Briggate etc. I think the distance from uni probably put me off more society involvement in first year doe.

Socially it's alright really! I was in Block D (C and D are the biggest blocks) and my 5 flatmates were all awesome. There were 3 flats on each of the 5 floors in our block and often flats would come together to hang or whatever. A flat on the ground floor used to have house parties every Friday which anyone was welcome to really.

Obviously you get what you put in so you gotta make the effort to meet the people around the accom site if you wanna socialise of course - most people do that during freshers but you're not necessarily going to meet your new best mates during that week. Through the rest of the year it's worth just checking out other blocks, hanging with new people. Basically what I'm saying is, it's social if you want it to be. I'd say it wasn't that quiet either.

I think it is out the way though - if you're in an accom with a better location it's easier to go and link up with new people from different accom sites. I'm sure people have mentioned Headingley - that's full of students and there is accom near there where in general I think the people are seen to be more outgoing.

Trade-off there is whether you wanna give up the en-suite toilets and relatively cheap price of Liberty Dock etc for it. Liberty Dock ain't quiet and unsociable but I do think that if you're the type to be going out a lot during the mid-week then it'll be easier to find others at some other accommodations but it's not like it's uncommon at the Dock.

Sorry for the unintentionally long answer ahah, and I'm sure you'll love Leeds whatever you do!

Aaahhh thankyou so much for the long detailed reply, definitely has helped me make my mind up! I really liked it from the beginning but I think I will just choose the oxley as myaccommodation seen as most nurses get put there, and also it will let me make use of my car whilst at UNi, as it will mean that I'd be able to drive to campus and to town, whereas at liberty dock there would be no need to drive around town or to town.

But thanks a lot you've really helped me in making my choice  x

Hi guys,

I'm in Opal 3 - first year, and all my flatmates are from Leeds Met, but I want to meet some people from the Uni of Leeds (where I am).

Anyone?

Cheers,
Marcus

HEy! What's it like at opal 3? Is it really quiet or social?
Okay guys, having been in the same situation as most of you last year and also having partied at pretty much every accommodation this year I'm in a good position to inform you about each place.

Henry Price: Went there a few times for some flat parties. Really cool place, one for the party animals. Rooms are quite small and toilet/shower looks a bit awkward. But still a very good place to live 8/10

Central Village: Everyone assumed when it opened last year that it would be amazing but realistically because it was the uni's new flagship accommodation security made sure it was quite a tame experience there. Good fun but the rooms look like they've come out of an Ikea magazine. Quite a few people were disappointed 6/10

Montague Burton: Most people either haven't heard of it or don't consider it. Bit mistake, it's amazing. Set around a courtyard which means in the summer you have endless bbq's (there are bbq facilities) and into the night you can use the metal bin lids and wood from the trees to start a fire. Really good if you like the whole community vibe. Toilets and showers are shared but in my experience that wasn't an issue at all. It's a 2 minute walk to campus and near the one stop shop for all your light shopping needs (drink, cigs, milk etc). This place is perfect for a mix of crazy social life and chilled out relaxing sessions. It used to be only for PG's but last year when Boddington closed they moved UG's in hence why not that many people have heard of it but trust me its great 9/10

Lupton: Ages away and looks quite dark and dreary. Had a few nights there and the kitchens were so small we had to move to the hallway for pre's. Not great 5/10

Leodis: Harry Styles predrinked there last year (seriously). But other than that quite quiet and a little further past Montague Burton. 6/10

James Ballie: Quality place for predrinks, usually attracts the rahs. I found the people living there to be quite a homogeneous bunch but good banter anyway 8/10

Devonshire: See James Ballie but in slightly grander/more expensive/quieter surroundings 7/10

Liberty Dock: Don't seriously. The place floods in the rain and you're miles away from the uni meaning you can miss out on the whole uni vibe thingy. If they do put you there, enjoy freshers there you'll have a great time but be aware eventually the novelty will wear off and you'll have to make the 40 minute journey to uni everyday for the most basic lecture. Apply for a transfer - it's really very easily done.

Can't think of many more. The best advice I can give you is that it is really the people not the property that make your time there sweet. Having said that certain places lend themselves to socialising to a greater degree.

Henry Price is a standard safe choice but you probably won't get it, James Ballie is another good shout but a bit of a treck in. Montague Burton to everyone who lived there felt like a little hidden gem this year. Because of it's PG past no one knew how many UG's were living there now and it was basically a party every night. Blocks were split up A-M and it lends itself well to meeting everyone from different blocks. Felt like a 500 person family when we left. Plus chilling in the sun in the courtyard the night after a heavy session is bliss.

Thats my personal advice from my experiences this year - apologies in advance for the terrible grammar/spelling/everything. But if you're anything like me going into 1st year you'll been keen to pass the year but more interested in the 'halls experience' thing and personally HP, MB and JB would be the best imo
