Retaking gcses just for medicine... worth it and do unis accept it?

Considering most medical school won't allow A level retakes after y13, I doubt they'd accept GCSE's retaken after y11. It's a wasted effort, and you could risk bringing your AS grades down by focusing too much on your GCSE's, thus ruining your chances at all med schools, not just birmingham!
