Hm I don't do film studies but I know some people who do, from what they say it seems to be mostly theory. Sorry I can't be more helpful!
I "think" it's mostly theory. If you are doing English and Film studies then you don't actually do any film in the first year. I'm not sure about straight film though.

Not true. There are films on the first year modules as they currently stand - see http://www.sall.ex.ac.uk/english/content/view/2024/626/ for this year's first year UG module descriptions - English Studies with Film students follow these modules for the first year before specialising subsequently.

There are persistent rumours of changes to the module line-up for first years from 2010/11 which will see a more dedicated optional film module introduced for first years. You should ask about this.

How carefully have you examined the programme specification for English with Film? Even the title of the degree suggests that English Studies will take the lead with Film Studies a secondary concern. If you want to be purely and exclusively taught film from the outset, either do a Film Studies course or look elsewhere to find an English/Film course with a different focus.

That is not to say that you will not, as a film specialist, find the training in English both interesting and useful.

Romeosbitch is right in that English and Film students take no film modules in the first year. They only study straight English, which does involve some discussion of film, but it's not a specific Film module.

Agreed.

Oh, ok...I wanted to specialize in English anyways, so I'm fine with it... just thought I might have gotten something terribly confused, cause I looked at the course description and it mentioned stuff about film. So it's english courses with some film elements, yes?

BTW, I know there are lots of opinion poles and info and stuff about the courses, and I've read those, but I was just wondering what you think of the course? To be honest I cant really imagine what lectures are like. It all sounds so impersonal to me, even if they say that you get feed back and stuff.
^.^ I'm sooo happy I found people doing this course, I was seriously starting to think I was the only damn person who thought it sounded totally awsome...everyone I know was like "English and Film? WTF?!"

Take a look at the module descriptions at http://www.sall.ex.ac.uk/english/content/view/2024/626/

You will do all four modules at Level 1 - Past and Present 1 and 2, Culture and Criticism 1 and 2. These will focus mainly on written literature but each of the four modules will include at least one, more often two or three, films.

If you wanted to, you could choose to write all of your essays and exam responses purely about film.

In the second and third years of your degree you get to choose which modules you take - four per year. In the second year (level 2) you will probably have to study two film modules alongside two non-film modules.

At stage three you get to specialise even more. All four of your modules will probably be film modules (one of these is your dissertation).

There will probably be changes to this line-up, especially if an optional film module is introduced for the first years of the 2010/11 intake.

To be honest I cant really imagine what lectures are like. It all sounds so impersonal to me, even if they say that you get feed back and stuff.

You'll share lectures with 200-300 other students, but be in seminar groups which number 15-20. Your seminar group is likely to be subdivided into an even cosier group of 7-10 (known as a study group). You'll meet the study group outside of seminars for discussion of the reading material.

There will always be several individual tutors you can go to for advice and information. It probably won't seem impersonal.

None of this will make any real sense until you get to uni, but I hope this helps.
