Computer Science + Mathematics at Oxford or Computer Science at Cambridge?
I was just wondering which is degree is better to do Mathematics and Computer Science at Oxford or just Computer Science at Cambridge.
Degree awarded by Oxford is : BA/MMathCompSci and it's a 3/4 year course
Degree awarded by Cambridge is : BA ( I think not sure) and it's a 3 year Course.Last edited by jasbirsingh; 16-12-2009 at 00:25. -
Re: Computer Science + Mathematics at Oxford or Computer Science at Cambridge?
Not the only reason to apply but Cambridge often has more places for Compsci than they have applicants of sufficient quality (as in they reject people but don't fill the capacity of the comp sci department), whereas Oxford doesn't have the capacity for the applicants they would want to take in. Take that how you will

Re: Computer Science + Mathematics at Oxford or Computer Science at Cambridge?According to my DoS, it has rather been the case that the quality of Computer Science applicants has been declining. As such, most of the computer scientists admitted to our college last year (including my college son) are CompSci with Maths, because apparently the technical grounding makes them marginally more competent.(Original post by aKarma)

We have yet to admit a Compsci with SPS

Re: Computer Science + Mathematics at Oxford or Computer Science at Cambridge?I wasn't aware the problem was getting worse; I just thought there was always an issue of getting good candidates.(Original post by SunderX)

Guess it's even worse than I thought -
Re: Computer Science + Mathematics at Oxford or Computer Science at Cambridge?Sorry to bring up an ancient thread - could you link me to Compsci with SPS? I'm assuming you mean social and political sciences?(Original post by SunderX)

Re: Computer Science + Mathematics at Oxford or Computer Science at Cambridge? The nearest thing Oxford do to that is Computer Science and Philosophy. Info here: http://www.cs.ox.ac.uk/admissions/ug...and_Philosophy. The other CS options at undergraduate level are straight Computer Science or Maths and Computer Science.(Original post by Junaid96)

Re: Computer Science + Mathematics at Oxford or Computer Science at Cambridge?Oh, I thought he was talking about Cambridge. I'm considering your Computer Science and Philosophy course, though. You wouldn't happen to be the same rep who's been helping me via PM, would you?(Original post by Oxford Computer Science Dept)

Looks like now it's just Psychology (from the SPS Tripos) that's being offered (alongside Maths, Physics, Geology, Evolution & Behaviour, Physiology, Earth Sciences and Chemistry):
http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/year1/
Most compscis end up with Physics or Maths though. I would very much have liked to have tried the SPS option, but it wasn't available when I applied. -
Re: Computer Science + Mathematics at Oxford or Computer Science at Cambridge?Hmms. SPS would have been nice, but never mind. Still can't decide on a course to be honest(Original post by SunderX)

it's driving me crazy as I still don't have a course I can aim for to motivate me.

Re: Computer Science + Mathematics at Oxford or Computer Science at Cambridge?I know that was a little while ago, but it's interesting to see your say that as I have heard the same but with Oxford and Cambridge the opposite way!(Original post by aKarma)

Re: Computer Science + Mathematics at Oxford or Computer Science at Cambridge?Cambridge have about 70 computer scientists a year, what's Oxford's figures? I know for a fact that Churchill tends to bee massively oversubscribed (I was on the lab consultative committee) and the ratio of acceptances is approximately 1 in 4.(Original post by fluteflute)

Re: Computer Science + Mathematics at Oxford or Computer Science at Cambridge? For 2012 entry, across the three courses : 66 offers were made, which is 1 for every 4.3 applicants. Apparently the Cambridge numbers for 2011 are 91 offers, which is 1 for every 3.8 applicants. (Not all of those will end up choosing to come / meeting their offers.)(Original post by SunderX)

Interesting to see that those figures are reasonably similar - although Cambridge is certainly the bigger department in terms of numbers of undergrads. Of course this doesn't tell us anything about the quality of the applicants, etc.Last edited by fluteflute; 29-05-2012 at 21:08. -
Re: Computer Science + Mathematics at Oxford or Computer Science at Cambridge?Indeed I am. Sorry, hadn't put two and two together with the user names. Clearly not enough coffee yet :-)(Original post by Junaid96)

Re: Computer Science + Mathematics at Oxford or Computer Science at Cambridge? That sounds right. The number of offers we made was up this year, partly because we brought in the new CS & Philosophy Course.(Original post by fluteflute)
