Anyone out there ever had a problem with the physical manufacture
quality of their CD-ROMs from the OU?
With my three S103 (Discovering Science) CDs this year, I had to start
by rather ironically making a copy of each one, as the originals were
near to unuseable.
On two out of our three CD-ROM devices; the blasted things make quite a
noise when spinning, and also give read errors. I think it would have
been the case in all three had I not used code to force the maximum
speed right down.
Worse than that, the OU installation software doesn't seem to cope
nicely with such read errors, and crashes the entire system (can't
recover things with CTRL+ALT+DELing to the task manager box and killing
tasks, just ends up with a locked system), leaving you to hit the reset
button. Once, this took out the whole system registry -- leaving a
completely screwed computer!
Fortunately I knew what was going on, was able to recover the system
with a bit of work, and was able to make copies of the disks onto better
quality ones (sad that CD-Rs should be better than the originals), and
everything is happy here now...
...however, these CDs are aimed also at people not so experienced with
computers, and for whom such a crash bringing down the system registry
would have been catastrophic for their system.
Surely this is a case of false economy? I mean, really, how much would
it cost to get the CDs manufactured to a slightly better quality?
Another 5p extra per CD perhaps?

Only happened to me on the m206 course. The course book software just
blued evertime. Fortunately the software component isn't required for
the course

sounds like a dodgy set to me, luckily last years T171 and this years
M206 have been ok, I would do as Alan suggests and ring for

Well copying them to quality CD-Rs solved the problem anyway, so I'm
sorted, just a bit worried about other folk encountering the
problem. I mean, if all three CDs were dodgy, I dare say I wasn't
the only one. *8-(
