Re: English Literature-to Kill A Mockingbird
Yep, there was a choice of 2 questions, you choose one to do:-
Q1) Do you think "To Kill A Mockingbird" is a fitting title for this novel?
Q2) Discuss the importance of Calpurnia to the novel as a whole.
I don't remeber what the textual analysis Q was, soz dude.
EDIT: Also, chill out abit, OK. -
Re: English Literature-to Kill A MockingbirdMore to write on Calpurnia than on the title, are you joking? Calpurnia was a minor character, you van branch Q1 of in so many different directions.(Original post by MedAmy)
what an amazing novel.
p.s. would have chosen the 2) question.. much more to write.
Also, it isn't a great novel, its a simple novel which people with bad taste percieve as great. -
Re: English Literature-to Kill A Mockingbird
I took that very exam - June 2009, the most recent for that book - the above question is from the year before, as I remember my teacher giving us those questions in our mock, cos I did number 1.
You can probably find the papers on the AQA website, as the june/july 09 papers were published there in november I think.
In my exam the questions were something along the lines of:
1.Discuss Boo Radley's character in the novel (I did that one)
and the other one to pick was:
2.What Racial tension was there in the book
Not the exact wording but that's what they were. xLast edited by Skye333; 27-12-2009 at 18:58. -
Re: English Literature-to Kill A Mockingbird
I would probably have gone for the first question. I don't feel I know any of the characters well enough to write about them lol. If the theme question in June is really hard I have no idea what I'm going to do lol because I don't like the character questions!

Re: English Literature-to Kill A Mockingbird
ah okay thats what i thought but
Orwell put:

so what actually were the questions? xYep, there was a choice of 2 questions, you choose one to do:-

although it wouldn't have achieved so many awards if as you say "it isn't a great novel"...
and I am not joking. There is much more to write on calpurnia, perhaps if you take a closer look at the text, you will understand what a major role Calpurnia played.
You clearly don't appreciate great novels; and can't read between the lines. -
Re: English Literature-to Kill A MockingbirdBecause awards have always been the hallmark of a truly "great novel," right? If you want me to wheel out a list of better books which haven't been so imprinted upon the public conciousness I can do. Literary awards are not a measure of the worth of a novel, and if you can't distinguish between the two I think it is perhaps you who doesn't appreciate great novels.(Original post by MedAmy)

I'm not saying it isn't a good novel, what I am saying is that it is a simple novel, it has evident themes, it doesn't push any boundaries, it isn't particularly poetic and I don't think it deserves the position it's been given.
Also, Calpurnia IS NOT a major character, she is a simple way of bridging the white/black gap, nothing more.
I appreciate great novels, and TKAM isn't one of them. -
Re: English Literature-to Kill A MockingbirdAppreciate what you say, and I think it is an all time classic, which plays homage to the sheer reality of what happened to those who were black.(Original post by Orwell)
