yeh it is good and I have watched it but it remains more of a series than a film

as for the other they are quite dissimilar to jarhead tbh, maybe bar Black hawk down, which feels more like a US war propaganda film
We Were Soldiers

There wasn't too much action in that, or am I thinking about Windtalkers?

it was a general comment, and just because it's not a film, doesn't mean it can't be recommended.

And "The Pacific" is out in March :P can't wait

Definately the Deer Hunter.
Also flags of our fathers is a brilliant portrayal of the fickle nature of the publics perception of war (deals with the nature of hero's and patriotism).
Second vote for 'The Hurt Locker.'

Best war film in ages. Set in Iraq as well.

It's much more accessible than films like apocalype now/full metal jacket etc. They're great films but can be difficult to watch. There's a lot of humour in Hurt Locker.
'Tora, Tora, Tora!' is my fave - it gives a pretty even handed and very precise account of pearl harbour and the days running up to it

It can't possibly be as good as BoB. It will still be good though. Although not strictly war movies Downfall (Die Untergang) and Conspiracy (2001) are very good films.
