Not a movie, but Generation Kill from the writers of The Wire is an excellent mini-series. It's set during the first invasion of Iraq.

Full Metal Jacket or 9th Company both great films!

I haven't seen Jarhead, but The Hurt Locker is indeed a film from the soldier's perspective. It's set in Iraq; filmed in Jordan. I loved it! Here's the imdb link:

yes watch generation kill, it focuses a lot on the soldiers and somewhat inadequacy of those leading them
I thought Hurt Locker was massively overrated, and not particularly enjoyable.

Generation Kill is a six part drama series that was on HBO a while back, which I thought was really good. Had hints of Catch 22 about it.

Second vote for 'The Hurt Locker.'

Best war film in ages. Set in Iraq as well.

It's much more accessible than films like apocalype now/full metal jacket etc. They're great films but can be difficult to watch. There's a lot of humour in Hurt Locker.
It's excellent.
