Sorry about the short period of problems last night. We're currently waiting for a full report on the cause of the outage. But there was some work being done to the site last night and I suspect that might have run in to some minor difficulties which caused the problems you've reported. So hopefully nothing to worry about really

About 20 minutes of downtime just then, with the "down for maintenance" message some of the time but not consistently. Hopefully admin will be able to investigate/explain tomorrow.

I have a question, what was the turquoise thing wrapped around the guys hand in the down for maintenance message?

For anyone who has this in safari, did anyone notice when refreshing, in the tab it said 'resources'?

Glad the site was back up quickly though, although silly to have a maintenance, possibly just minor updates or something.

I think we're somewhat unusual here in that we do get explanations for even minor downtime I'm sure it's just a case of admin being busy.

Exactly that. We'd love to tell everyone about everything in advance, but the reality is that the days do get super busy and sometimes its better to get a build live and issue fixed...we try not to though, and dont do too bad normally.

Last night was a site speed related build - which made a big improvement, but we weren't aware in advance would need downtime. We then had fun and games with the maintenance notice and Varnish - our caching servers - which explained that weirdness.

The night before was an upstream ISP maintenance window that shouldn't have impacted us but did..

We made a few updates to the announcement section last night. It look like you're seeing a little hiccup as a result of that. If you clear the cache of your browser, or even just refresh the page then I think that should fix most of the problems you see.
