Wondering why the site went down for Maintenance? should at least inform us... even if its for 20 odd mins

Glad the site was back up quickly though, although silly to have a maintenance, possibly just minor updates or something.
I think we're somewhat unusual here in that we do get explanations for even minor downtime I'm sure it's just a case of admin being busy.

Exactly that. We'd love to tell everyone about everything in advance, but the reality is that the days do get super busy and sometimes its better to get a build live and issue fixed...we try not to though, and dont do too bad normally.

Last night was a site speed related build - which made a big improvement, but we weren't aware in advance would need downtime. We then had fun and games with the maintenance notice and Varnish - our caching servers - which explained that weirdness.

The night before was an upstream ISP maintenance window that shouldn't have impacted us but did..

We made a few updates to the announcement section last night. It look like you're seeing a little hiccup as a result of that. If you clear the cache of your browser, or even just refresh the page then I think that should fix most of the problems you see.

Let me know how you get on

At a guess, it could be related to security precautions currently being taken in relation to the compromised passwords. I know that you guys have likely seen this, but for others' reference: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/anno...hp?f=611&a=854

Could always try the catch-all of clearing your cache?

Thanks for reporting it guys. We had a little issue last night which we're looking in to. It meant the site was giving people errors for a couple of minutes.
