Re: BMW not good in snow(Original post by gbduo)
It is a rubbish investment, you will hardly use them and when you do, you will use them for like 3 weeks of the year. Even if you do switch intermittantly between winter and summer tyres, the condition in this country just don't warrant it for most of the time.
Winters are usually mild around 10C on average, summer tyres are perfectly fine at operating at these temperatures. Winter Tyres in the South really is stupid, because you will be the only person able to get out to go to work anyway. Everywhere shuts down, because no one else is stupid enough to get winter tyres for that one week you might need them.
Climate change and all that.....weather becoming more extreme...etc.... didn't get the memo? The world is warming up so there's much more snow in britain. -

I have much better uses for £400 plus rims as well.
And I got a RWD V8 Jaguar weighing the best part of 2 tonnes home in the snow on PZeros. Sure it took a while, but I can't imagine winter tyres for that being cheap nor can I expect to use them enough to justify it.
I could buy an old banger of a car which I can afford to crash for the same money as winter tyres.
They just don't make sense in the south when prolonged snow is a rare occurance indeed.
Besides, this snow was caused by a prolonged period of high pressure, there is no proven link to global warming, yet.
So, winter tyres = waste of income = waste of beer money/petrol -

You, kind sir, failed at detecting the massive saturated sarcasm and comedy in my previous post.
WRT Snow tires, hey, your choice, and yeah they're overkill in england, but the reality of it is that they make a huge difference. -
Re: BMW not good in snowChrist you and your ******* memo's!(Original post by HDS)

Re: BMW not good in snow
been taking the lexus out the last few days which has been interesting. fun in the corners and all but I've got stuck a few times which has been annoying and the car was snowed in altogether from last wednesday to friday..
worst of all, the rear nearside between spending the last few weeks spinning and going down the autobahn has worn totally flat
January is NOT the time to be buying new tyres so the spare'l go on and it'l wait till feb I thinks!
I was thinking of getting some steelies and chains for the rear wheels but don't think it's worth it for a week or two's use a year. still. should all be over shortly!
autos are an annoyance in the snow to say the least! -

Lol. I love british people
You're all so cute with your 6 inches of snow and whatnot.
i can't even imagine what you people would do in canada or america where you have BIG cars with BIG AUTO-transmission engines lol...oh...and don't forget about 102839103890x the snow

Re: BMW not good in snowlol too right. we've had 6 inches and I've been bitching about it all week(Original post by HDS)

still, I can work from home so rather than bother with it I stay put! its not that big an ordeal, its just annoying
they have the infrastructure to deal with it over there to be fair, here we get a man in a high vis and a bucket of pebbles! -

well... wether they haver the infrastructure is debateable.
Toronto for example (despite being warned long in advance) is always caught off guard initially and leaves the first snowfall on the road, so you can have a foot of snow no problem, and half the time they dont bother cleaning up blizzards and such so you still get snowier roads than UK

Re: BMW not good in snowYes, but in the USA where there's often heavy snowfall, they are well prepared for the poor conditions.(Original post by HDS)

My Dad worked in Boston for a few years and he said as soon as it started snowing, the ploughs were straight out clearing the roads and by morning everything was clear. He said two foot could fall overnight and the roads would be perfect come morning. Plus, if you live in the USA in a high snowfall area, you'll have winter tyres.
Problem in Britain isn't necessarily our driving; it's the fact that there aren't enough gritters or ploughs in the country and everyone is on summer tyres. Snow ploughs and winter tyres just don't make economical sense here, so people are left floundering. -
Re: BMW not good in snow
Personally I wouldn't bother with winter tyres.
If you have an old set of wheels with narrow rims that will fit it might be worth welding some chains onto them along with some narrow tyres if you feel you have to be super prepared for anything.
Personally though I fail to see the point.
