Seems like you've made your mind that you want to go to Loughborough. Loughborough is a pretty good university, for Business, Engineering, Sports Sciences as you mentioned. If you really want to go there, that's good. However, Loughborough is a pretty low-profile university, compared to universities like Birmingham. Also City University might not do great in overall ranking but it has excellent connections with the financial industry and has an extremely reputable Business/Economics aspect. You might want to look into that.

Hi thanks for your reply

I havent made my mind up yet lol, am just exploring my current options at the moment.

What do you mean by low profile? It's just that when looking at league tables Lboro does better, sometimes by quite a bit of a margin.

Well I know for career prospects it does, especially in Economics which if you hadn't noticed is the course I've applied for. More Investment Banks recruit from Loughborough than those.

For Engineering courses Loughborough is better, business is rated better at Loughborough also when looking at Rankings. For other traditional subjects the other Unis beat it as Loughborough does not do these, it specialises more in Engineering, business, sport etc.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, this is from my own research I've done.

I don't think there's a real advantage to be gained by going to Loughborough for investment banking over Southampton, Birmingham or Manchester, or especially Manchester which is a targeted university albeit to a lesser degree than LSE etc. It's a matter of having the grades, being good enough and bothering to apply.

Southampton for example have a stronger economics and computer science departments than Loughborough, as well as mathematics, and they have one of the strongest engineering departments in the country. Southampton also have a strong music department, history, especially Jewish history, and and all three of them have their own medical schools, instead of a shared one like BSMS or Peninsula. Not to mention that they all ranked higher than Loughborough in the 2008 RAE.

So in conclusion, no, Loughborough does not 'beat' either Manchester, Southampton or Birmingham. Go there if you prefer but don't do it under the delusion of it being better than those three universities.

Yeah Lboro is pretty good when it comes to leagues. It's 17th best in UK according to Good University Guide but when compared to the rest of the world, it's around 294th best.
Birmingham is around 21st best in UK but 66th when it comes to the world.

Sometimes, you just have to weigh in the overall standing as well as the standing for your specific course. To the best of my knowledge, I think Birmingham is quite swell for Business, Economics. Same with City, which is quite renowned for their financial courses as well as strong ties to the industry.

By low-profile I meant to say Lboro fares extremely well in league tables (nationally) but yet not many people seem to know that much about the university, unless one has applied there. Maybe you could choose City/Birmingham as your firm, Lboro as your insurance or if you're heart is set no Lboro, then that's the one for you. Either ways, the career prospects with either would be pretty good and sometimes you have to take the chance.

I study Economics at Loughborough and its a good uni. Not LSE/Warwick tier by a long way but definately as good as Birmingham/Manchester etc. I like it here but I'm kind of looking forward to starting a masters at LSE.

razzab you did well to get S&T interviews from here! I got a few as well from DB, ML, and a Electronic broker AC from ICAP. If I was the OP though I would aim higher for LSE/UCL/Warwick, however the social life at these universities is NOTHING like Loughborough.

Depends what you are aiming for in the long run I guess. If you want a middle office role say Finance/Risk/Tech then that is easy to get from Loughborough. I know atleast 10 other people with placements/internships from Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Credit Suisse etc etc... Front office prospects are not THAT great but it is possible. In the same tier with Manchester/Birmingham and the other top 20ish Universities.

Hope this helped :P
Since it got bumped and the topic was S&T i'll add what i think about the IB process - i may be wrong but who knows

I don't think uni actually makes much difference at all past interview stage. Sure you can say that without getting past the first step you can't get to the second but...... i've been following the spring week thread in IB forums loosely but i've seen a lot of the top uni applicants get interviews at lots of places but get lots of rejections - and not many offers (don't quote me on the part about offers, as i said i followed it loosely).

Way i see it is, getting to the interview stage is pretty much pot luck. Going to a good uni increases your chances but if you got the things in your CV and grades that they want to see, you can still get an interview. Once you're at the interview stage, you're on your own imo and the uni you go to pretty much goes out the window - impress them and you'll get through to second round interviews despite not going to oxbridge or LSE.

This is true. I've had a fair few at most of the major investment banks now and it really is down to the individual and if you're good you will shine through from any university. A bright, ambitious and persistent guy from Manchester/Loughborough will stand a better chance than a lazy arse from Oxbridge.
