Is this a good deal - HTC Hero?
HTC hero, £25 per month, 24 months, ulimited internet/texts and 500 minutes. yay/nay?

Iv had my eye on it but I dunno, Im really torn between this, the HTC HD2 or the iPhone. I have had the same phone for 3 years now so iv totally missed the whole smartphone boat so Im a complete noob as to what to buy. My contracts up in february though so Im after a phone with internet and a lot of texts.

Anyone got any other suggestions also if theres anything better I could get? £30 a month is pretty much my limit, but I dont mind paying for a handset

    cheers

Since youre on contract and its ending - you should phone em up and say you would like to cancel your contract in Feb because you've found a better deal (Lie, tell them o2 or whatever have given you same offer for £20 so why should you stay?) then they will pass you on to some retentions department that'll reduce the price or you can haggle for a diff deal.

I have the HTC Hero on a contract pretty much the same as that.
It's a good phone but the app's aren't as good as the iPhones at all. Also you have to constantly keep deleting your messages because I got lazy and ended up with over 3000 messages and it slowed the phone right down, ended up leaving it on charge over night and it took about 6 hours to delete all of them and I've heard it can take 9 hours if you get any more than that.
Tbh as much as I like the HTC Hero I kinda wish I had gotten a iPhone

    Hope I helped

The only thing is, 2 years from now the Hero will be seriously outdated. I'd recommend getting something like the Nexus One.

Saying that, i'm paying the same amount as you on Orange (but with 500MB internet per month) and I get 900mins

iPhone is more expensive though, and the Android system is going to get quite big in the future methinks.

It's not out in UK yet though is it? and once it's out in say March (my guess) then I can imagine the contract will be expensive then.

Yeh one of the reasons I didn't get a iPhone was because it was £10(ish) more a month. Don't get me wrong, I am seeing an improvement in some of the app's but I just wish the Market system was a bit more organized and laid out a bit better.
I do like the phone, I just feel like I should say some of the problems with it so people think more carefully about what they get. If in doubt a quick google search for 'HTC Hero Problem' or along those lines might help, same goes for any other phone.

The Nexus One does look pretty good though :woo: , if that lives upto the hype it could be a phone definitely worth getting. :yep:

Yeah the Nexus 1 is going to be immence, considering it has the latest Android verson. But yeah for now or the next 24 months Hero will do some justice for its cost. The lag time people have talked about are supposably sorted (only some lag right at the start when you turn phone on)

They go into it pretty indepth =]
only worry for me is if the camera is as bad as they point out - oh well win some / lose some

by the way its £25 on tmobile 24 monthj for 1000 mins/unlimted texts
    (add extra £5 for internet)
I'm thinking though that they may be willing to reduce minutes for the internet.

The camera isn't that bad I dont think, but then I've never really been into phones with the best cameras

Thats pretty good, mines £25 for 24 months with orange, Unlimited Texts 500/600 mins and 500mb of internet every month £40 for the phone. Not too bad, I dont really use my minutes at all tbh

Edit: Plus an extra £5 a month for insurance :P

Thanks for the responses guys, Iv already cancelled my contract with orange, they werent up to haggling with price to upgrade and itd probably cost me about £20 in phonecalls to sort it haha, I have my current breeze block until the end of the month.

Im a bit reluctant to get an iPhone because I have an iPod touch that is only two months old. That, and its already been out a long time. The iPhones camera is a bit ***** aswell. The camera on the Hero is 5mp, the video is supposed to be crappy though, Im not too fussed about video, I have a HD video camera that I never use.

Do you think it would be wise to wait for the nexus 1? Or are there others?

The HTC hero is a very good phone. I may, however, be inclined to wait for the Nexus 1 to see if it really is able to live up to the hype.

I'm pretty sure it's release is imminent, and it could also result in the HTC hero being made comparatively cheaper!

Virgin mobile have the htc hd2 for £30/month, free phone, 24 month, 800 minutes, unlimited texts, 'unlimited' internet (subject to 1gb fair usage).

Also if you can afford to pay £80 up front for the phone they do it for £25/month, 18 month, 600 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited internet. This works out just sub £30/month averaged over the contract.

When my contract expires in April I intend to go for the latter, however I hear mixed reports about network coverage - and the phone is currently out of stock.

Edit: And if you are currently a virgin customer you get the first two months free and I hear it is possible to haggle the monthly price down slightly.

Im surprised they werent up for haggling - did you lie and say you found a really good deal and like you've been with them for XX amount of months so deserve something for your loyalty?

Well I don't know if you should bother to wait for the Nexus, yeah its going to be a brill phone but my guess is it's going to be around £30 or £35 month contract and I cant be bothered waiting for it to come out in contract. The Hero is the next best thing

The Hero's camera is a waste of time tbh. It's useless unless you're outside on a bright, sunny day.

In regards to the comments on a disorganised market place - there'll be an update for the Hero mid-Feb which will make the market place a lot better, as well as give you a shed load of new features!
