Question about internet and gaming at Edi.
I was reading the internet section in one of the stickies and couldn't find the answers.

    1) Is there WiFi available most places, I know in public areas but what about halls? Does it require assigned accounts?

    2) Can you game, specifically on Xbox Live? I have heard that alot of unis block such activities and would like this cleared up. I assume that LAN is still allowed regardless?

    3) Obviously certain activities are blocked by default (P2P networks/torrenting) but what else is blocked? I have heard stories of certain unis blocking MSN video chat among other things.. Any input is helpful here

    Thanks..

You can get Wi-Fi basically everywhere in the university, also in the halls. There's a Wi-Fi router in every lecture hall and also in almost every normal rooms for tutorials etc.
I never had no Wi-Fi signal while being on campus

... in the halls (when using a cable) you have 10 Mbit/s upload and download. Nothing is blocked, not even P2P i think. I don't use it but I know someone who has been caught using torrent and they said they would disable his internet account if he would not explain why he did it.

Hooking up an xbox is quite difficult because everytime you access the internet you have to type in your ID and your password. However, a friends roommate managed to do it but I'm not sure how he did it.

I assume you logon to a computer/laptop and record the IP address.
Then set up a static IP on your Xbox so that you can disconnect the laptop and sign onto Xbox Live before the session expires.

Maybe, anyway. I hope it's possible.

The only we way could figure out is to connect a laptop to the xbox and bridging the connection. And nothing is blocked not even torrents and had no warnings or anything.

This sounds great. When were (ignore if you still are) you at Edi? Because I know they changed the provider recently...

Also, I assume it's the same provider everywhere? I would be going self-catered. Less rent =/= less internet capabilities, does it?

I know I'm bumping an old thread, but I remembered the question about Xbox Live, and was wondering whether anybody knows how one would go about getting a DS online... Any suggestions would be great, thanks.

Shame it sounds like they've changed the internet from when I lived in uni accommodation a couple of years ago, none of this logging in malarkey, disgustingly fast (once speed checked it at 300 meg at about 2am) and completely unblocked. Still watching all the tv shows I downloaded now!

Keycom certainly is no resnet, although the amount of downtime that resnet had made it a bit rubbish.

Yeah just looked into it, making you pay £70 extra a year for a speed upgrade, cheeky!

So downloading, say, the latest episode of "House" would probably get me an internet account suspension?
