Re: Mature student 2010 entry thread!I was like that when I got my first offer (in fact I got two on the same day). I pounced on everyone that came through the door and I could hardly make myself make sense I was so excited.(Original post by RosiePeriwinkle)
I've just got an Unconditional to Durham! I am so made up, I keep logging into track to check I've read it right and it does not really say unsuccessful! I was practically hyperventilating when I told my Dad.
I will definitely hyperventilate if Cardiff give me an offer, but I'm not holding out much hope... -
Re: Mature student 2010 entry thread!
This is what my UCAS looks like at the moment...
Keele University - Withdrawn
University of Hull - Conditional
University of Huddersfield - Withdrawn
Loughborough University - Conditional
Queen Mary University London - Conditional.
All to do chemistry with a foundation year.
Ahhh it's worrysome, where do I go! -
Re: Mature student 2010 entry thread!
Hello everyone,
I'm Benji, 25. I originally planned to go to university in September 2010, but I've decided to go in September 2011 instead. Seems so far away at the moment. I'm tempted to take a few OU short courses to pass the time.
A few questions that I hope someone can answer ..
In 08/09, I completed a foundation degree in Social Sciences at the University of Leeds, achieving a 2:1. Would a potential university be impressed by that? I'm not sure what regard a foundation degree is held at. I shall be applying to do either Social Policy or Criminology.
Would I be able to apply for 2011 now? or is it still too early?
As for the age-thing at university, in my experience, it doesn't matter. I had a couple of guys on my course who were in their 50s. -
Re: Mature student 2010 entry thread!Would definitely recommend some OU short courses if you have the spare time. They don't take up too much, but they're really interesting and you learn loads!(Original post by Benji84)

Of course they would, foundation degrees are pretty much 2/3 of a normal degree course. Are you wanting to go into the first year of a course though? Have you checked out the funding implications for this? Because having done a foundation degree will mean you won't get student loans (at least not tuition fee loans, don't know about maintenance loans) for the first year, only year two and three (or if it's a 4 year course, years three and four).A few questions that I hope someone can answer ..

Re: Mature student 2010 entry thread!I'm definitely living in halls (for the simple reason that I haven't lived in the UK for a very long time and it'll be easier than having to arrange private accomodation in some place I don't know well).(Original post by sweetnesspink)
Are any of you guys staying on campus/in student acc? Are you worried about being old? Or not being able to tolerate the normal halls behaviour lol? I'm clean, quiet and work hard. I'm not sure these things go hand in hand with halls!
It would be a nightmare if I ended up in accomodation with a load of messy, loud 18 year olds though (and they'd only end up thinking I was the boring person for wanting to do strange things like, oh, I don't know, actually work
even though I'm only 22-you grow up a lot in that few years difference). I think you just have to hope whatever uni you go to has sensible ways of putting people together. Some unis ask you what age group you'd want to be with, others have automatic ways of doing it by age (I remember someone saying they were 23 and just missed the cut off age at their uni and got lumped into the 18-23 group when they'd have rather been with people who were 23+)
You can always email the accomodation office when you apply and ask if they can keep it in mind what sort of age group you'd like to be with though. -
Re: Mature student 2010 entry thread!
I've emailing them like crazy lol!
I'll be 24 in October and I'm going straight into 2nd year, but because I'm a 'new' entrant I can't apply for the 2nd year + acc I have to apply for the first year halls which is a bit crap to be honest!
They have said I can put down that I'd like to be housed with other 'mature' students but I worry that I wont be and by then it'll be too late to sort anything else out.
I worry too much! -
Re: Mature student 2010 entry thread!
I think living in halls will be cool. I wouldnt worry about it too much. I will be 25 when i get to uni. I think when we think about 18ish year olds we think that they are going to be childish (at times they will be). Im sure that they wont be as knowledgable as us lot but im also sure that we will be surprised how grown up they can be too. They would have earnt their place at the uni on the basis that they can do the work.

Re: Mature student 2010 entry thread!
I agree Nat$ but most people talk about how "wild" and noisy halls are. I think I might be too set in my ways for that!
Bah. Stirling is my first choice (I haven't made my decision on UCAS yet, but I have in my mind!) ut this is the one thing that puts me off a little. I don't want to spend my whole year moaning about mess and lack of sleep! -

Re: Mature student 2010 entry thread!
Yeah I've been emailing them quite a lot (hopefully they don't remember my name and punish me for bothering them by putting me in crap halls!!). They don't have designated 'mature' halls but I can ask on my form to be housed with other mature students.
At th same time I don't want to isolate myself as something 'different'. I'm not discriminating because of age. I get on really well with teenagers I just don't know if I could live with them!
Man so much stress!! -

I lived in student accommodation while at Leeds. Before applying I did mention that I'd like to live with students in their early-mid 20s, and they managed to arrange that easily enough. -
Re: Mature student 2010 entry thread!
Hopefully I will get placed with people around my age. But I don't want to let accommodation and my worries surrounding it affect my choice of uni. Halls is for one year, a course is for 3 so I should pick based on course content etc.
I think maybe this is an exercise in chilling out for me! If I do get put on a floor with fourteen 17/18yr olds then I'll just need to stop being a neat freak who enjoys sleep and maybe embrace the party side of me (that hasn't been allowed out in about 6 years!) -
Re: Mature student 2010 entry thread!I agree. Just because we are older doesnt mean we cant party like everyone else! lol Uni is about all aspects of learning.(Original post by sweetnesspink)

Re: Mature student 2010 entry thread!
Well done to everyone who has got offers! It is so exciting I an hardly wait! Best of luck to everyone still waiting.
We are going to be living out as I'm moving with my OH and he is looking for work in Durham. He is a Maths teacher so shouldn't have too much trouble, already got 10 applications he is slowly filling out. Fingers crossed we will have his job sewn up by Easter so we can concentrate on other stuff. I still want to be fairly close to college and be involved in what is going on though. Any Durham mature students in halls will be welcome at mine for a nights respite!
