Linguistics - books to read?

Could anyone recommend me any books to read for linguistics? Also, people who are studying it, how are you finding it? I am thinking of combining it with French :smile:

The only general linguistix book I've read is Course in General Linguistics by Ferdi de Saussure, before my uni interview. It was interesting. But akshally I found it quite heavy going. Anyway I don't study general linguistix, only Czech, but I think it's grate. :h: Warm wishes. kopi.
