Except for Law and Economics, UCL isn't particularly competitive and never has been really. That's not to say it's a bad uni, but I think the unfortunate THES ranking that put it as 4th in the world (which are complete ******** by the way; 4 UK unis in the top 6? Come on...I think even a top 20 with nothing but US unis would be more credible than that) has created a completely skewed view of it. It's a solid, top 10 UK Uni.

Maybe you should have read the post more carefully. The OP is French so he has home fee status.

And answer to the question, I don't really know why I have a feeling that getting into UCL is quite easy as long as you got the grades, although people keep telling me how competitive the uni is.

Honestly.
I apologise for my mistake, better?

They will get three times as much for the tuition fees, for overseas students. Unis like overseas students because they give them more money. That is probably why they are keen to have 20 French students comig from your school.

UCL's definitely in the top 5 of the UK(...though NOT 4th in the world - THE-QS World University Rankings is a joke, according to it LSE is 67th in the world and Chicago is better than Princeton.)

Getting an offer from UCL is a big deal, don't snub it just because you don't rate people who got in!

4th best uni in the world.

No it isn't.

You do realise that the government subsidises our fees down to the ~£3k level not the uni (i.e. the uni is still charging us full rates)...

I seem to get the picture from what I've heard it's harder to get into LSE>ICL>KCL>UCL. Like OP has said alot of my classmates have recieved offers from UCL but less from the more "prestigious uni" like LSE, ICL or KCL. IMO UCL isn't picking the most able students but instead giving offers to whomever that makes the grades. Even though alot of courses at UCL is still require high grades like 3A or 2A/1B, maybe they think their not first choice in alot of the student's application and those who got offers would go to another Uni.

For example: I know a girl who spent 4 years at college studying for her A-levels and while I was 3 years younger than her- she was still in my C1 exam  so lets face it she wasnt the most able person in the world. But she still got an offer at UCL studying Chemical Engineering, a tough and demanding course.

Final note: I think UCL is a good university, their not high ranked for no reason. But I don't think they're as competitive as they're rival Uni's like LSE or ICL.

Hope this helped.

KCL>UCL in terms of prestige - i think not. UCL is much better than KCL for prestige and generally. much better depts and much better quality of teaching and research. for law KCL might be slightly different but certainly not as good as UCL

an offer does not guarantee a place, if she can meet the grades then they're good enough. they only have predictions to go on, they can't see actual module marks + she might have been resitting C1 on an A to get a higher A - a very sensible decision imo.

ICL and LSE are better for different reasons. it's because they are specialists for individual subjects - UCL is ranked top 30 in the world for every subject it offers, which imo is much better as you meet people that are incredibly good in lots of different areas. UCL is an excellent university and you shouldn't dislike it because they give offers.

No one with any real knowledge of London unis would rate KCL as 'more prestigious' or better than UCL.

Yes, I've realise that after I've posted but cannot be asked to go back and correct it. *sigh*

1) The girl I was talking about probably resat C1 more than just a couple of times. The point I was trying to get across is she wasnt good university material. Okay?

2) I never said I dislike UCL because they give out offer to whoever, i was simply replying to what OP has asked whether UCl is a good uni. I'm entitled to my own opinion and I will express them how I will. Think before you write. :nothing:
I am slightly bias but I believe it is easy one of the top uni's in UK, they give better offers than other universities I have found.

SOTON only offer AAA for my course but when I looked round UCL >>>>>>> SOTON by about a universe. Don't get me wrong though I still like SOTON I just think its a tad hyped up.

I agree their postgrad outdoes their undergrad though.

any UCL student with a shred of dignity would agree UCL is not 4'th in the world.

any top 30 U.S. university could blow it out of the water. to rank it above MIT and Princeton is nothing short of a joke. not to mention getting into UCL is a cakewalk compared to getting into MIT where the students are MUCH more intelligent and harder working.
Yes it is.
Well I think most people who cite the 4th in the world thing are kidding. I certainly am. Most of the people I know at UCL are pretty able and I'd say that UCL>KCL in terms of prestige. I don't think we're genuinely world leading in any department really, but we're pretty good, certainly by English standards in nearly every subject we offer. So UCL can't be that bad...

1) all they have to go on is teacher's predictions, so you can't really blame them for not knowing. if it was for engineering then a lot of the time it is more about enjoying the subject and having the passion to study the subject.

2) ucl is a good uni. you were suggesting that it is not as good as kcl, which i (as well as most people) have a strong opinion that differs. i was explaining why people consider icl and lse to be "more prestigous" as you put it.
you are entitled to your opinion but do not try and write stuff that is only some of "the truth" - ie explain what you say, you could have said that icl and lse are better for individual subjects and thats why you consider them better.
Excellent for economics, but generally overrated, LSE and Imperial are better. Its not 4th in the UK let alone 4th in the world. They like to think they are better than Kings, Warwick and Durham but not by much.

Princeton doesn't have good graduate schools, Chicago does and has been a powerhouse in the past. Princeton is only amazing for its undergraduate teaching, in which its better than Harvard and Yale. But the reason that Harvard and Yale are so rated is mainly history and their power-house grad schools.

maybe because that ranking isn't for undergraduate students :facepalm2:
